Dan Cloutier Attending Wings Camp

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Veteran goaltender Dan Cloutier, out of hockey last season, will attend the Detroit Red Wings’ training camp (Sept. 13-15) on a tryout.

Cloutier, 33, who contacted the club and asked for the tryout, hasn’t played since appearing in nine games with the Los Angeles Kings in 2007-08. He has been bothered by a series of ailments, including a season-ending hip injury midway through 2006-07.

If I recall correctly Cloutier was one of the last goalies to wear the helemt/cage combo, same as Osgood.

Not sure if he has anything left but I’d really like to see the Wings with a proven backup rather than Howard. I’ve never seen anything from Howard to indicate he will be an NHL goalie.

You mean based on the NINE games he’s played in the last four seasons?

It amazes me that nobody wants to give this guy a chance.

Errr… goal from center ice to turn a series around Dan Cloutier? Yikes. I think we’ve become an orphanage rather than a hockey club.

Good thing Tuzzi is there to kill all helpless things.

I wonder if legace would’ve ever panned out as a legitimate number 1 had the wings truly given him the reigns.  In retrospect (ie me looking) he had damn good numbers in detroit; around a 2.20 (full duty) with a .915.  Hmmm…

I agree with most…give howard a shot (at least 20 games), it’s not like he’s going to cost the wings a playoff spot.

Cloutier carries a curse of his own, and based on his stats I wouldn’t call him proven at all.  But he does wear the retardo cage mask which seems to be popular in detroit (ie hasek, osgood) but as I remember sometimes he wears a traditional ITECH goalie mask (as I remember they’re the mfg).  Regardless he’s cruddy.

I think it’s merely a move to have a daily reminder to Howard that this *is* his last shot.

You know, in case McCollum, Pearce, and Larsson aren’t enough.
