Still, there are those in the organization who are questioning the wisdom of making the $1.6 million commitment inherent in making Auld a qualifying offer or opting for a potential upgrade elsewhere.
One option is the free-agent market, where potential names include Buffalo’s Martin Biron, Anaheim’s Jean-Sebastien Giguere, St. Louis’ Manny Legace and Los Angeles’ Mathieu Garon.
Another is a trade before Tuesday’s deadline. Buffalo has been rumored to have an interest in a Biron-for-Belfour deal, and other teams with two quality goalies, such as Anaheim and San Jose, could dangle one in efforts to land a Todd Bertuzzi, Gary Roberts, Martin Gelinas or a package of players.
