Decisions in Detroit

From George Sipple at the Free Press,

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will be on the golf links soon, but he has some business to take care of the next few days. Holland hopes to meet with goaltender Dominik Hasek and forward Dallas Drake to gauge their interest in returning next season before he leaves for Thursday’s NHL awards show in Toronto.

Holland also will talk with defenseman Chris Chelios, who needs to have his injured knee scoped in the off-season.

“I have every intention of coming back,” Chelios said. “It’s never been a money issue, so we’ll figure it out and hopefully we’ll be back in this stall again.”

Earlier this year KH was on HNIC. He was asked if Cheli was coming back. He said yes. Later on in the broadcast Cheli was on the After Hours segment. He reaffirmed he would be back in a Wings uniform. The thing you gotta love the most is, that it is not about the money. Never is with winners. Sitting out the final had to be one of the hardest things Cheli has done. But if that was how he helped the team, then that was all that mattered.  That just goes to show what a team player he is. The end result speaks for itself.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

I in no way shape or form can see why on earth that Holland would want to re-sign Hasek.

Howard has shown when called up that he can play at the NHL level and would probably be a good backup for Osgood.

Hasek is at the end. Do the Wings really want a 44 year old backup who has never really been able to come in cold and is injury prone? Will they make Ozzie the back up again.

Hopefully he’ll retire and force the Wings to actually advance a goalie prospect instead of letting them rot in the AHL.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Holland is more than anything being polite.  It would be rude to come out and say “we aren’t interested in having Hasek back” before he talks to him personally.  He’s done his best for the team and was a scratch during the playoffs without complaint, and the least he is owed is to find out what Holland thinks of him and any potential future with the team face-to-face.

That’s true but he could just as easily say nothing. Also it could be the writer interjecting a bit.

Just looking toward the future it scares me that the last in house starting goalie the wings brought along was Chris Osgood.

I don’t particularly hold Hasek any ill will and he was great with his benching, but it’s just time to move on. IMHO anyway.

Agreed.  When it comes to personnel moves, Holland doesn’t exactly have a good track record of telling the press what he’s really thinking.  Even if he’s planning on telling Hasek that they’re not interested in re-signing him, I think he’d never say that “out loud,” so to speak.
