from Kristina Rutherford of Sportsnet,
As the buzzer sounded at Winnipeg Arena and the Jets skated off the ice for the last time, Derek Meech stood in shock.
His face paint messy from tears, the 12-year-old was dressed in white for the final fight, and this was it.
The Jets were leaving town.
“It was hard to see them leave,” Meech, now 27, recalls. “After the game, none of the fans were leaving and tons of people were crying. It was a great experience but it was also pretty sad.”
The Winnipeg native never dreamed that 15 years later the franchise would return—and even better—that he’d be a part of the homecoming.

I’m getting sick of Canadian writers saying “the franchise has returned!” “A” franchise has returned, but “The” franchise has not. That franchise is in Phoenix. They can’t just erase the Thrashers from history.

Um, yeah NHL Jeff, you are right. I wonder how the Thrashers will respond to playing before fans instead of empty seats? I understand want the team to be the Jets, but I still think Thrashers is the ultimate and perfect name for a Winnipeg team.

Meech should be able to stick with this team as a 6-7 blueliner. He is smallish, but quick and that was a major weakness for Atlanta. With much better management (how could it be worse?) they will value his speed. He has always worked hard and been a team player, what more could a coach ask for?
