from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
The Devils and Kovalchuk’s camp still have not submitted a contract to the NHL for approval. From what I understand, at today’s meeting they discussed the framework for a contract and whether it would be acceptable to the NHL.
If they get that OK, they will presumably go forward with a formal contract that will be signed and then submitted to the NHL for approval.
Given that the NHL has been in on this process, it would seem a good bet that when they do submit a signed contract, which apparently could happen Tuesday, it will be one that they are sure the league will approve.

Devils, will you please sign Ilya already. Keep messing this up and hes gonna sign with LA and then Im gonna have another good team in the west to worry about. In fact, while your at it, just sign Paul Kariya as well, Ilya and Paul would be good together. If he didnt already sing with someone.
I want Ilya in the east and out of my hair. Kovalchuk is one of those players that could change the game in just a couple shifts. Not to mention that LA is pretty formidable already. Out of all of the surprise teams last year. Phoenix, Colorado and LA, surprised a few with their overall record. I really think LA is the team that won’t fall back. They are here to stay and will get better. Im not sold on phoenix and Colorado is beatable.
