From TSN,
The New Jersey Devils have placed defenceman Vitaly Vishnevski on waivers. The 28-year old blueliner had two goals and five assists in 69 games last season.
The Devils signed Vishnevski to a three-year contract prior to last season.
Update 7:52pm ET: A note from Tom Gulitti at Fire & Ice --
The Devils have placed defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski on waivers with the likely intention of buying out the remaining two years on his contract to clear salary cap room. Vishnevski signed a three-year deal last summer for $5.4 million. His cap hit is $1.8 million per season, but he is owed $2 million in actual salary for each of the next two seasons.

Tampa should pick him up if they can fit him cap-wise.

Devils want to pare the payroll down a bit (more to stay within a budget than to position themselves for a big trade) and they already have a ton of dmen. Martin, Oduya, White, Salvador, Mottau (ugh) are certain to stay in the NHL. Brookbank probably stays as a #7 guy. Andy Greene will be given a chance again as a 6th dmen unless Corrente impresses as he has in the past few years in training camp and the Devils think he’s ready.
Anssi Salmela and Tyler Eckford are longshots and they have plenty of guys on the farm who can play in case of major injury bugs like Mark Fraser and Jay Leach.
Basically, re-signing Salvador meant that the Devils got the physical defensive presence they took a flyer on when they signed Vishnevski. VV proved to be unreliable (runs out of position for big hits like a madman way too much) and is paid at least 2x as much as he should be.
Please, take Vishnevski. He would be a disaster in Tampa. Probably would be most places at his price.

Purely a Sal cap move? Do the Devils have some young blue liners ready to play on NHL ice?
