Did The Canadiens Make A Mistake?

from Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette,
When Carey Price reacted like a deer in the headlights to the first shot he faced in his first NHL exhibition game, you could feel a little tremor go through Montreal.
When he followed that up by surrendering a total of 10 goals on 39 shots over his first two starts, that tremor might have registered on a few seismographs.True, it’s only the exhibition season. The games are meaningless and so are most of the performances.
But with Price — the Montreal Canadiens starting goaltender — you want to see some confidence. You want to see some saves. You want to see something, anything, to prove that Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier didn’t make the biggest blunder in 15 years when he dealt playoff hero Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis in the off-season.

I don’t think we needed to wait for the preseason to answer this question. It was a perplexing move from the start. Yes, Yes, Yes they made a mistake.

Lets just say, Montreal doesn’t have a chance against the Caps or the Pens last year in the playoffs without Halak. Of course they made a huge mistake. Price has never played well… but hey, at least Price speaks French! That was the reason, no?

Yes.
To be fair, Halak had one nice season. I think it’s fair to say he’s got to turn in a repeat performance before we can truly say he’s a top NHL goalie. But based on what we do know Halak is the better goalie without any doubt.
