Dirtiest Guys in the NHL According to Other Players

From TSN:

Chris Pronger and Steve Ott are the dirtiest players in the National Hockey League, according to a survey of their fellow players.

A Sports Illustrated poll of 324 players that is to appear in this week’s issue has Anaheim Ducks defenceman Pronger and Dallas Stars forward Ott in a tie, each chosen by 13 per cent of their peers.

Jarkko Ruutu of the Ottawa Senators was third at 12 per cent, with Sean Avery of the New York Rangers fourth at 10 per cent, followed by Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers at five per cent.

Update 3:11pm ET: From the Detroit Free Press, Chris Pronger responds—

Told of the survey results this morning, Pronger laughed and said he disagreed.

“That’s their prerogative,” he said, adding that it didn’t surprise him he won. “There’s always a lot of whining out on the ice,” he said.

Pronger said it was possibly based more on his past than his present (he has only six penalty minutes in the 2009 playoffs, for example – none of them against Detroit).

Ryan Hollweg, the check from behind master, should have made that list in the 10% range.

Not for a lack of trying though.

I have said this for several years, I believe pronger commits some sort of penalty (cross-check,elbow,slashing,interference…etc) on every shift he takes. Seriously. I would love NBC to put one of those isolation cameras, which they normally put on ovechkin or crosby,  on pronger. He only gets whistled for every 10th slash or cross-check he commits.

He only has 6 minutes because the refs apparently have a special set of rules for Pronger.

Ryan Holwegg would have to play in the NHL to make the list (he finished the year with the Leafs AHL affiliate, playing 4th line minutes)

I like how he tries to blow off a poll… of his peers.

It’s one thing that we think he’s a dirty scumbag.  It’s another entirely that NHL players he plays with and again think that as well…

“Legally? Oh, now we’re going to talk legally? Don’t start with me on legally. You just called me the dirtiest player in the league and now we’re going to talk legally? Legally?

And in addition to being the dirtiest player in the league he sounds like a rocket surgeon!

“There’s always a lot of whining out on the ice,” he said.

Good response.

Except that nobody was whining.  They were ASKED.  Asked specifically who was dirty.

Oh, and it wasn’t “out on the ice.”  Though I don’t know for sure, I think it can be surmised that the SI journos weren’t skating around during the game, asking players.  I tend to think that would have been noticed, and there would have been a lot of bitching about it because that’s just distracting to the players.

“That’s their prerogative,”

Whoa, that’s a big word, YES. Quit drummin’ things up for the TV, YES, Pronger.

YES.

What? Pronger tied for dirtiest player in the legaue? I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

Yah, Chrissy, your fellow competitors put you at the top of the list…and you should have been there alone and by a wide margin. Ott is a pussy(cat) compared to you.

“There’s always a lot of whining out on the ice,” he said.

Whining. Grimacing. Moaning in agony. Stifling cries of pain. All of those things happen after you’re done slashing, cross-checking, high-sticking and blind-siding guys on the ice. But none of that compares to the whining that comes from your cone-head of a coach when things don’t go your team’s way.

But that comes off the ice YES so I guess it doesn’t count.

“Legally? Oh, now we’re going to talk legally? ...with him occupying the goaltender’s attention, sometimes occupying the defenseman, and he’s got a great stick—he knocks down a lot of pucks, tips a lot of pucks, and is able to knock loose pucks to teammates as well for goals.

Hmmm. I don’t see anything mentioned there that is illegal. So, basically, what you’re saying Pinhead is that Homer “occupying the goaltender’s attention, sometimes occupying the defenseman” and knocking down and tipping lots of pucks is tantamount to an elbow to the head? Right. Got it. Let me file that under “whining about being outplayed by a talented person” as well as “I wouldn’t have to cheap-shot people if I wasn’t such a sociopath”.

Thanks for the clarification, Mr #1 Dirty Player in the League.
