Do Wings & Sour Grapes Go Together?

via Darren Dreger of TSN,

There are a lot of allegations coming out of the Detroit Red Wings dressing room regarding the ‘too many men non-call’ against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 3.

Allegations to the point that there are suggestions Dennis LaRue, who was one of the two veteran referees on the ice, was allegedly yelling at the Penguins players to get off. I don’t know that the video evidence supports that; this might just be part of the gamesmanship that goes on.

We do know that Detroit has had some issues with the officiating and this might just be a part of the sour grapes aspect.

There’s going to be Wings fans on here complaining about how the NHL and Gary Bettman told the refs to let the Pens get away with stuff so the series would last longer.

Then, there’s going to be Pens fans complaining about missed interference and Zetterberg covering the puck in the crease.

Bottom line, the officiating has missed a lot, it has been inconsistent (especially compared to the first three rounds), and it is getting ridiculous for both teams

i found this picture on the caps board.  i think it clearly shows larue and one of the linesman looking right at eaton skating off the ice.  there was plenty of time to blow the whistle as the ref noticed eaton skating at the top of the detroit bench.  i would say it looks suspicious.

True - and it makes the entire league look like it’s fixed, a joke, or amateurish - or all of the above.  Certainly not what would logically be expected of a supposedly professional organization drawing in billions in revenue each year from two nations.

If the officials had all gone to Dr. Rahmani they wouldn’t have all these vision problems.  smile

I just have a hard time believing that something like that would happen. I can understand cautioning players about their play as that probably happens all the time. But to intentionally aid a team? What motivation would LaRue have for doing that? He’s basically committing professional misconduct and maybe jeopardizing at least a fine and/or his career by doing that.

The motive is simple- he’s a good ole boy just “letting ‘em play.”  That’s one theory, anyway.  I think it’s fairly clear, though, that the officials consciously- if not physically- looked the other way on this one.  Just like they looked the other way on all of the holding, clutching, and grabbing going on- on both sides- up until Jonny Ericcson’s vicious, vicious, er, interference on Cooke with eight minutes left in the third last night.

Gotta love those Zebras.  And Widdle Gawy, too, of course.  T.G.A.

I am trying to be objective. I don’t want to be that ‘conspiracy theory’ guy, but c,mon, anytime Bettman is in the vicinity of anything to do with the Wings he looks like he intended to pass gas and soiled his drawers. I think it’s very obvious that the Wings represent a lot of things that he would like to see eliminated in his version of hockey utopia.

I know that there have been missed calls both ways, but has there been any marginal or unnecessary calls going against Pittsburgh? NHL.com had a video from Steven Walkom that showed examples of what would no longer be tolerated in the new world of “no obstruction - no interference”. Every time the Wings used their new propensity to dump and chase the Penguin defense looked exactly like the examples of what Walkom said would no longer be tolerated. The blows to Holmstrom and Franzen’s heads are another of the leagues pet ‘no-nos’. The network camera picked it up clearly, but the on ice officials were looking elsewhere. Gotcha.

If they want to let ‘em play, OK. But you can’t ignore all that obstruction on the break in and then flag Ericsson at a critical time for something less egregious. Something is fishy.

That said, the Wings need to remember how to kill a penalty.

Yes, a lot of calls have been missed both ways, but missing 6 men on the ice, that’s just a little too egregious, especially when the top two officials had to see Eaton making his way off the ice.

As for the interference, Ericsson’s call didn’t rate compared to most of Gill’s interference.  I refer to Gill as the “Human Interference Call” as I don’t recall the last time he didn’t commit a penalty at the blue line.

As it stands, though, the Red Wings have to do a much better job at killing penalties.  Would it have hurt to get the puck out of the zone, at least once during that penalty?  Might have made the difference for them.

Go Red Wings!

Even if they truly missed it (I’ve seen bar league games with drunken refs who are maing go-go eyes to their girlfriend in the stands who couldn’t miss something that obvious - remember… these guys are the best of the best in the whole world!) the NHL should at least own up to it publicly. Their arrogance and inability to acknowledge any mistake drives me nuts.

Good teams overcome adversity. But how much? No Datsyuk? Suck it up. No former Selke winner and top face off man in the playoffs Draper? No whining. No stay at home deceptively effective cro-magnon defenseman Lilja? We can overcome. Let’s not add silly zebras to the mix.

No. What I’m assuming is that the NHL is officiated by unbiased refs who don’t give a damn about the outcome. Sure they are going to miss a call here or there and have their interpretations; and we can all talk about incompetence, but there’s a huge difference between incompetence and messing with the integrity of the game by intentionally aiding a team in avoiding a penalty. Look at what happened to that NBA ref that got busted last year. You think any official wants to risk that kind of heat? That is why its a bit hard for me to believe this rumor.

Okay, I kinda dig what you’re saying, but I think some of these guys get off on making ‘the big call that it takes brass marbles to make’.  I think they are sensitive to what their boss thinks will make the league better, etc. Maybe it’s more unconcious.

I really, really try to be objective, but I spent half the game screaming at the obstruction that the Wings (especially the 3rd and 4th lines) were fighting through and then feeling the dismal numbness when I watched Cleary get tangled up around his man.

Yeah, Cleary’s was a penalty. But no more so than twenty I saw from the Penguin defense.

Sure. I remember fondly how the 70’s Canadiens used to dress the trainer, their towel boy and the parking garage guy in the finals because they were so much better. And then the the aforementioned Penguins… remember how they were so great in the early 90’s that they actually let Jean-Claude Van-Damme play goal for a few minutes? Yeah, when you’re a talented team you need to be able to overcome anything. In fact, that’s a great idea. Wings fans keep talking about how their team is a dynasty. Maybe they should paly all games down a guy. If there so great and all…

Randy,

I’m not really arguing with your point too much. But you don’t see anything odd about the least penalized team in the league being at a 3-1 disadvantage in power plays? Just one of those crazy quirks? Did you see any Wings player do anything as league frowned upon as Cooke’s elbow to Holmstrom’s face three seconds after a whistle? How about the Pen’s little elf climbing the beanstalk to ring Franzen’s bell? We’re just going to let the 6 on 5 thing go as an no-big-dealoversight? Maybe the four guys had a lot of GM stock and were understandably preoccupied? Stuff was let go all over the place, but Ericsson gets called at the ‘rock star’ moment when emotion and desperation are at their peak. Complete coincidence? Alright. I’ll go with that.

I’m not an analyst. Just an admittedly biased fan. I try not to be too much of a homer. I thought this was a really interesting topic because I am seeing a real disparity in the officiating in connection with calls made, non-calls, timing of calls and the overall effect on the games. I am really interested in what other people think. Maybe it will change my mind.

When they see that I figured them out they will send out a super-secret encrypted email to the refs and linesman telling them that the jig is up. You won’t have to TIVO the Pens Victory Parade.  I’m sure you won’t have to go down to the unemployment office that day, and I’m sure your Mom won’t make you go and get her cigarettes and a bottle of ripple from the store.  What is it like to live in your Mom’s basement?  LET’S GO PENS!
