Does Roenick Belong In The HHOF?

via Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
• What does it say about Nikolai Zherdev, when he’s only 24 years old, is one goal shy of 100 in the National Hockey League, is a free agent, and only teams with 10-foot poles want to touch him?
• Yes, Jeremy Roenick could talk and make you laugh, but the guy could play, too. A bunch. He’s borderline Hall of Fame and may be able to talk his way in.
• The math on Jerry Reinsdorf’s apparent offer for the Coyotes is somewhat startling. It goes something like this: He wants $23 million US, or thereabouts, in lease concessions from the City of Glendale, wants to deal Wayne Gretzky out of the game by not paying him his $8 million a year, and get some $15 million in revenue sharing annually from the NHL. In other words, he figures that, with $43 million in handouts, he has a chance to break even.

Roenick to the U.S. HHOF? Yes.
Actual HHoF?… well…
I’d have to say no. Close, but no. He never won a Cup, and there were too many teams he was with where he was supposed to be a real difference-maker and… well… he wasn’t. He just wasn’t.
His numbers are a bit padded too, from playing for at least several seasons where he probably shouldn’t have still been playing.

JR already has a monument in the LA Kings Hall of Shame. Looking forward to seeing him hawking ‘collectables’ on the infomercial circuit real soon. Good riddance.

I think it might take him a while, but he’ll get there. If a guy like Pavel Bure (779 pts in 702 games) can get a nomination, no offense to Bure, but JR’s stats comparatively speaking (1216 pts in 1363 games) would warrant at least consideration.
Currently, there are 73 players in NHL history that have put up 1000 points or more.
43 of those players are in the HHOF. 5 players are eligible between 2010-2012. 10 players are still active. 15 players are NOT in the HHOF.
And there are certainly players in that 15 not in the HHOF that could be there: Dave Taylor, Bobby Smith, Bernie Nicholls, Dino Cicarelli, Brian Propp, Steve Larmer, Doug Gilmour, Dave Andreychuk, Adam Oates, Phil Housley, Vincent Damphousse, Brian Bellows, and Theo Fleury to name a few

Of course! The only media people who will question his credentials come from Canada. Though these are the same people who think that Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour belong, although they have lesser stats and contributions to the game.
