Don’t ‘Fall’ For Sidney

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The Rangers New York Rangers must get the puck in deep, they must force the Penguins to play as much as possible in their own end of the ice, and they must stay out of the penalty box in order to prevail in the Eastern semifinal series that commences here tonight.

Equally important, however, is what the Rangers must not do in this marquee matchup between Broadway’s bright lights and Sidney Crosby’s name above the title, for they must not become preoccupied with Pittsburgh’s - and No. 87’s - penchant for embellishing and contesting every call, and they must not become consumed with matching lines against Crosby or Evegni Malkin.

Jagr is 6’3’’ and 240.  Crosby is 5’11’’ and 200.  Could have something to do with it.

We don’t see much of Crosby out West. What we do see is him foaming at the mouth yapping at someone, usually at the ref’s.

Oh sure there are highlights of his amazing skills too, it just sours me on him a bit that he seems to have perfected the forsberg talent / diving / wining combination.

I used to look at Crosby as the best, but I’ve seen him in two intense seasons and playoff series. He is a phenomenal player. But when I see him shove an opponent so that his teammates will dogpile the opponent, when I see him fall next to someone so that Bettman’s striped boys are required to give him a powerplay, I lose much respect. Ovechkin is the true pride of the game (and unfortunately for Bettman’s one-nation-mindedness, Russian), and he is the MVP bar none in this league.

Nothing like the pride of t he game shoving a player (Briere) headfirst into an open gate 50’ from the puck.

Sorry....hehe...cheapshot at Ovechkin.  But honestly.  If Crosby is the whine, Ovechkin is the dirty.  Not really defending either of them, I guess just playing devils advocate.  Ovechkin isn’t a saint is my point I guess.  Do I actually have a point?  Hah.  I just like remind people of one of the dirtiest things I’ve seen in hockey in a while.

Anywho....Ovechkin still for MVP!  Deserves it whole heartedly (Malkin is a close second in my books after the year he had!)

The lovely diving Ovechkin did all over the ice against the Flyers is conveniently ignored.  His twirl-a-thon after Richards barely touched him was quite an interesting manuever.

I don’t think Ovechkin’s particularly dirty, but I do think he’s selfish in a way that guys like Crosby, Iginla, Malkin, Getzlaf, Gomez, etc. aren’t. He spent games 2 and 3 clearly preoccupied with trying to lay out Richards and game 4 preoccupied with chasing Timmonnen (sp?). Unsurprisingly, Washington lost those games, since Vengeance doesn’t show up on the scoresheet and Ovechkin clearly put scoring second. Factor in that he cherry-picks whenever his team gets hemmed in the defensive zone, and you’ve got a guy who still has a great deal to learn about playing a team sport.

Still this year’s MVP, though.
