Don’t Guarantee A Top Seed

from Scott Morrison at Sun Media,
Rather than guarantee a top-three spot, simply guarantee a playoff spot.
So, in this case, if the playoffs were to start now, put the Hurricanes in seventh or eighth spot depending on their standing. That way, you might punish only one team (if there is a non-playoff team with a better record), rather than five who are locked below them in the seedings just because.
It means a world of difference, too. If Pittsburgh was allowed to be third, the Penguins would meet the sixth-place team in the playoffs, not a four versus five matchup. That could be huge.

here we go again.. why not just put all teams in the playoffs, eliminate divisions, and go from there..
Divisions are there to be won, the prize is one of the top 3 seeds. I do believe every team is gunning to be at the top of their division first and foremost, next shot is to get to the playoffs..
tell pittsburgh to go for the 1 or 2 spot.. oh wait they are, so lets water it down by putting them in 3rd so they can on paper have a better advantage to move forward.. Any seed can be any other seed. its been proven over and over again..
I hope pittsburgh loses in the first round!

Strength of divisions varies over time - the Southeast can’t possibly always be so bad, and some of the strong divisions should get worse over time.
It’s stupid to make a long-term change based on a short-term situation.
Rules is rules. If you don’t like a lower seed, then win more games and move up!

I would much rather see Pittsburgh as the third seed play a six seed. Anything that can be done to keep the Great White Hope in pursuit of the Stanley Cup should be done. It’s very important to the success of the league that the GWH play in the playoffs. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that as goes the GWH, goes the NHL.
