Don’t Look For A Home-Town Discount For Semin

from Dmitry Chesnokov at the Examiner,
I decided to ask Semin’s agent, Mark Gandler, a few questions about his client’s contract negotiations. “Yes, we started the process and have exchanged ideas,” - Gandler told me today. He did admit that it was “impossible to predict” if a contract will be signed before the Olympic break, as the negotiations are at a “very preliminary” stage right now. But Gandler did say that “it’s clear that the Capitals want to see Alexander in their line-up.”
I asked Gandler if there was a possibility Semin would be traded at the deadline if both sides cannot find a compromise by March. “You don’t trade one of your best players from a play-off team to another play-off team. It is self defeating,” - Semin’s agent replied.
And finally, a lot of fans believe that Semin might give a “discount” to the Capitals. I wondered if this could become an issue in the negotiations. Gandler’s reply was firm: “I don’t believe in discounts.”

maybe if OV took a little less money like other superstars this wouldn’t be such a stretch that may be able to resign Semin, Green, and more importantly Backstrom…
they better hope Varlemov plays every night like he did in the playoffs when these guys chase the big money, or they’re going to be the worst one trick pony team in the league pretty soon.

I was under the impression that AO had his contract offered at that ridiculous sum. If that is the case, was he supposed to negotiate himself down? Never mind if the amount is worth it, the cap number is enormous, and that’s the point here. Regardless, it’s as much a management blunder to sacrifice so much space for one player as it is a player/agent greed issue.
As much as it tries, even the current CBA can’t fully protect management from occasional mistakes.
And a related point on AO’s contract, what happens if the cap were to shrink some year far enough that his salary exceeds the max pay per player?

What the league needs is for more players with less skill, that is the only way the salary cap system is going to work. They want the best players in the world with no way to compensate them adequetely. No wonder so many players are going to the KHL to make lots of money with no tax or escrow added. Ditch the cap...oh wait...the NHLPA is a non-entity at the moment.

As it currently stands: no player can make more than 20% of the total upper limit, and any existing contracts are rolled down to that point. Ovechkin’s cap hit is $9.538 million, so the cap would have to drop past $47.68 million before his salary would decrease, which isn’t expected at all.

good question, hypothetically though, if it did drop that much (salary cap) would they then re-rate the existing contracts? or are they grandfathered in?

Caps have alot coming off their cap. Theodore,Poti,Morissonn,Pothier and probably Nylander. That’s 16 mil right there. Semin isn’t free until 2011. If they trade him it will be because of his inconsistancy not cap problems. Caps have young cheap players ready to step in:Neuvirth,Alzner,Carlson, etc.
