Down To Two Teams For Sundin

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
Unless someone pulls a rabbit out of the hat at the last minute, Mats Sundin will be, by the end of this week, either a Vancouver Canuck or a New York Ranger.
Sundin met with Rangers’ GM Glen Sather on the weekend, but sources say the Rangers have yet to formally indicate exactly how much they are prepared, or able (because of the salary cap), to pay Sundin. Once Sundin’s agent J.P. Barry gets that information, perhaps in the next 24 to 48 hours, Sundin is expected to make a final decision on where he will play….
In the meantime, Sundin is heading home to Sweden. He has completed his training in North America and plans to keep skating while in Sweden, spending Christmas there before joining his new NHL team immediately after that.
added 4:12pm, Bob McCown of Fan590 just reported he has been told Sundin has made his decision and he has chosen the New York Rangers. It will be announced later this week.
added 5:06pm, Link to Fan590 quoting Bob…
Update 6:12pm ET: (Alanah) TSN added to their story with this—
There had been speculation that Sundin had already made his decision and that he was about to sign with the Rangers, however Barry dismissed the rumours.
“No decision has been made,” Barry told TSN. “(It is) inaccurate speculation.”

For the love of all that is good and holy can this dude just make a decision so we (ok fine my team’s GM) move on??

Yawn. Even were it an announcement he was signing, 99.9% of the fans really don’t care.

So he is signing with the Rangers? What are the Canucks going to do with all that cap space now? I guess we could take over some under achieving player in exchange for picks.

Bill Clement on XM Home Ice just stated the Rangers would have to trade either Drury or Gomez to clear cap room.
I believe there are othe options available to the Rangers then trading either those two.

What happened to Clement, anyway? Once upon a time I really thought he was a voice I should take seriously.
As far as Sundin goes, enh. The assets the Rangers are going to have to move to fit him in essentially neutralize his value to a team, so the Rags would pretty much be making themselves shallower.
Oh well. This is exactly the kind of move the Rags always love making. Big money UFAs.

wake me up when the soap opera is over.

Basically, the Rangers will be ridding themselves of spare parts who haven’t exactly cemented themselves a place on the team anyway. Losing Prucha, Fritsche, and sending Korpikoski to the minors in exchange for Mats Sundin is a huge upgrade, anyway you look at it.

Remember folks, this is just one person reporting this and as we have learned from the past, anything can still happen.

Unless the Rangers would be able to dump Rosvial, they would be able to offer a little over 5 million pro-rated to Sundin, otherwise, they really would not be able to offer Sundin more than 1.5 - 2.5 pro-rated.
Basically, I think that means that Sundin will choose where to play not based purely on money.
Also, if the Rangers were to lose out on Sundin, I see them resigning Shannahan.
