According to Habs Inside/Out, the Wings have placed Aaron Downey on waivers.

I find that hard to believe. Downey played great last night against Nahsville. He confronted Tootoo first thing, and the little turd did not make a peep all night.

Me too w2j2, but Habs Inside/Out knows their hockey.
Downey was the odd man out, when Dom came back from IR, someone had to go.
What I can’t believe is no mention from the MSM in Detroit.

Paul,
I think the Wings are just doing what they did a month ago: waiving Downey so that he can be sent down any time within the next 30 days (or 10 games) without a hitch. That way, the team can bring in someone from Grand Rapids who might be able to fill in better for a regular if one of the top guys goes down.
Even with Hasek back and Downey still around, they aren’t over the 23-man limit.

Yep, waivers expire after 30 days or 10 games, whichever comes first, so if you’re looking to bring somebody else up, you waive him and more or less get the flexibility to call someone up without putting anyone on the IR…

Sent an email to Ansar Khan. Got a quick response. He says it is true and that it’s insurance against another Hasek injury, as it will allow the team to call up Howard over the next 30 days without having to wait around for someone to clear.

30 days or 10 games… got it. But correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t that mean any other team can pick hip up?

Cementslinger,
Only until noon today, at least according to Ansar Khan. My understanding was that it was two days, which would make it noon Saturday, but Khan insists it’s today. If Downey’s not claimed by then, he’s untouchable again.
