Steve Downie with a cheapshot on Jason Blake.
Make sure to watch the complete video, comments from Don Cherry and Paul Maurice at the end.

Funny, we have two stories on the front page here of Flyers acting out of control. It’s the same old story, and gets more indefensible by the minute.
Apparently that’s not enough, NHL? What, do we need 3 or 4 stories on the front page at the same time before you do something about it?
This is beyond ridiculous. It seems like the Flyers pull something every single game now.
Maybe the NHL needs to start docking them points in the standings—2 for each incident since the trend here is glaring and obvious. Bring your damn team under control already!

As a Flyers fan, that was a cheap shot on Blake and has no business in the game. Downie has talent, but if he doesn’t control himself, he’ll be up there in the same category as Simon, if he isn’t already.

philduba, you arent a real flyers fan.
its amazing that people are making comments about downie even if they didnt watch the game last night.
if you werent paying attention to the game last night, refs were letting blake and other TML players take runs at flyers goalie.
before downie was standing up for himself, blake decided to hit him first with a high stick.
it’s amazing people are defending blake because this the same guy who was spearing people left and right last year. does anyone remember the spear he crosby last year?
what goes around comes around. downie will answer to what is coming to him down the way. its a part of hockey. people need to grow up or stop watching it.
it’s amazing the ignorance that people say even if they didnt watch the game. BTW, don cherry true colors got expose in that clip.
last time i check downie and blake are basically the same size

FF, I am a real Flyers fan, have season tickets and did watch most of the game last night. I don’t care what was going on, but if the the refs have you wrapped up you stop throwing punches, period. Anyone that says that wasn’t a cheap shot by Downie is an ignorant a**.

ok genius,
is ok for blake to do this before getting punched?

same thing happened to Ladd the other week, on a punch by Avery. Ladd had to have surgery.. what did Avery get.. nothing..

where in any of my comments am i defending blake? Is it right to do what he looks like he’s doing in the picture you posted? no, but neither is hitting a guy while the linesmen have you wrapped up. that’s all i’m saying. in the context of the post and video, it is a cheap shot by downie but that doesn’t condone anything that happened prior by either player or team. i don’t remember which announcer said it and i can’t recall if it was the devils or leafs game, but they said downie must learn not to retaliate right away, that he has to learn that payback can come at any time whether that’s the next shift, during the next period or game. once he learns that he’ll stop being a detriment to his team instead of the fourth-line energy guy the flyers need him to be at this point.
the one thing i can’t stand about fellow flyers fans is the orange and black glasses they view everything in. it’s always their player who is getting shortchanged, it’s never the flyers fault. downie has promise, but he’s a hot head and you don’t think everyone in the nhl doesn’t know that and will do everything to get him riled up so he does stupid things like this? take off the o/b glasses and objectively look at the video and tell me it isn’t a sucker punch. any hockey fan, regardless of team support should be able to ascertain that much.

FlyerFan: Nice try with the picture of Kubina about to get a penalty. That’s not Blake, and that didn’t happen just before Downie punched him. Nor did he roll into your goalie or hit his with a high stick. Did YOU watch the game? Or are you just making it up as you go?

Desdemona,
Flyersfan is always making sh;t up as he goes. Give him ten minutes and he’ll swamp the thread with Colton Orr hits on Ovechkin.

What are you FF, ten years old? If you are older than that, please go back and actually complete the fouth grade. This time try to stay awake during English class. Your statements are idiotic enough, but your complete lack of basic grammar skills is mind-boggling.
If you want people to take you seriously, at least try sound like something other than a third-grade dropout.

I guess he’ll have to break someone’s neck before he’s properly dealt with. Really, the Philly coaches should be reigning him in. If I were coaching, I don’t want to guy on ice that I can’t trust not to take stupid penalties, let alone disrespect the game.
