DETROIT—The Red Wings have re-signed forward Drew Miller to a one-year contract.
Miller, 26, was a sixth-round draft pick (186th overall) of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2003. He played parts of three seasons with the Ducks before being traded to Tampa Bay prior to the 2009-10 season. After 14 games with the Lightning, the club placed him on waivers. The Red Wings claimed Miller on Nov. 11, 2009.

Eh, glad he’s signed but his status with the team is still in limbo until the Modano situation reaches some closure.

meeee too. great signing. i bet Stevie Y is wishing they never waived him last year. Miller turned out to be another guy who found his niche once he was utilized properly.
I really think Miller is one of those guys that Babs can get the most out of. Whereas a guy like Leino, not so much. I think that’s why, no matter how successful Leino is, I still support keeping Miller over him (which is essentially what we did at the end of the day.) He just didn’t fit Babcock’s style well. He interpreted Babs philosophy as “trying to make him like Holmstrom”, when it’s really about tireless and fearless effort. Pav and Z play Babs style of hockey to a T and they don’t play like Holmstrom. It’s about effort and just playing the role the team needs at any given time. Miller plays that style and he was not only an efficient 4th liner (or 3rd for much of the season), but he and Eaves completely rejuvinated our struggling PK. I’m eager to hear the terms, but hope he’s around for a while.
The rumors are that if the Wings sign Modano they will have to trade Miller. That would be a huge mistake. If you’re bringing in a 40 year old for one or two years at the most, unfortunately I think Draper is the one who becomes expendable. I hate myself a bit for even saying that, but Modano more than makes up for Draper’s leadership and experience. Helmer has taken over the “speed” role from Drapes while Miller and Eaves have taken over the top penalty killing. Why sacrifice a 26 year old who is just finding his game on this team for a 40 year old’s swan song… especially when you have another 40 year old who will be sitting in the press box if we’re healthy?
I’m way off track here… what I meant, is Yes! Me likey very much +2

He’s three years younger than I am and going gray.

He’s just worried that some dumbass is going to choose a slowing-down 40-year old over him…

Modano can still skate, and can play the point on your second unit. Don’t dismiss him out of hand for Miller, who is not an upgrade to 40 year old Modano.
They can still trade Meech if they sign Modano to get under the 22 man roster limit or expose someone to waivers. They don’t need to be roster and cap complaint until the end of the exhibition season I believe.

Great re-signing of Miller. Drew was built to be a Red Wing.
I’m sick of all the Modano talk.
