Ducks Could Still Have Trouble Signing Selanne

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
What appears clear is that unless the Ducks are fortunate and another club claims Schneider, or they go an entirely different direction and trade another player or group of players, it is going to be very difficult to clear enough cap space to sign Selanne. It could come down to the Ducks being able to offer Selanne little more than the NHL’s minimum salary, say $500,000, which might prove once and for all Selanne’s long-held contention that money is nowhere near the top of his priority list.

If no one picks up Schneider, and they send him to the minors, I believe they’ll have over $2 million in space.

(I realize that if he is in the minors, they will still have to pay his salary, but it won’t count against the cap)

Yeah but isn’t there some goofy clause for players over 35 that sign multi-year deals? Won’t his salary (if unclaimed) count against the cap no matter what?

Nevermind, it’s only if he retires

According to Spector’s Trade Rumours today, because he’s over 35 and on a multi-year deal, his full salary would still count against the cap.
As I said before on the other large comment section for the previous Schneider story, this is looking more and more like a move (waivers) because Burke wouldn’t sweeten the pot by adding other players/prospects/picks, since Burke gains almost $6 million in cap space, still has one of the best defensive cores, and has enough money to sign Selanne and possibly someone else now or at the trade dealine, whereas the other team gets a huge salary to cover for an aging vet whose stats may have been kept high thanks to playing for a great defense corps (last stop with the Ducks), and before that with a great team period (Wings).
Considering no team would offer up a 7th rounder for him, is it really enough that now they can have him and keep a 7th round pick? I wonder if he’ll come back up on waivers and Selanne signs for a league minimum salary, because other than that, the options are very restrictive and potentially embarassing for Burke.

Selanne is a class act and will do what it takes to help the Ducks. That said, the Ducks will not let Selanne take the league minimum without bonus compensation…
Selanne will be the first Duck to have his number raised to the rafters at the P-Honda Center.
