Ducks Take A Wait & See Attitude Towards Free Agency

from Dan Wood of the OT Register,

“July 1 and 2 are going to be very interesting,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. “The whole month of July, I’m going to be very curious to see what happens.”

With 16 anticipated NHL players under contract, the Ducks have a salary-cap commitment of slightly more than $37 million. That sum will rise significantly if the Ducks, as expected, re-sign unrestricted free-agent defenseman Scott Niedermayer, whose previous four-year contract was worth $6.75 million annually.

Among those also unsigned are defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who could receive an offer so lucrative the Ducks will lose him, fellow unrestricted free agents Todd Marchant and Rob Niedermayer, and restricted free agent James Wisniewski.

The Ducks and Marchant, who was outstanding while centering the club’s checking line late last season and in the Stanley Cup playoffs, are haggling over terms, with the team desiring a one-year deal and Marchant seeking more.
