from Kevin Allen of Mucking and Grinding,
With teams starting to sort out in the NHL standings, there are folks in the hockey world that deserve more recognition for what they are doing:
5. NHL fans: Considering the uncertainty of the economy, the league’s attendance seems strong. Seventeen teams are playing to 97% or better capacity, and only four teams (Phoenix, Florida, Atlanta and the New York Islanders)
6. Detroit Red Wings coach Mke Babcock: GM Ken Holland usually, and rightfully, receives plenty of credit for keeping this franchise on to. However, Babcock’s coaching plays a big role. We can see that this season as the team has overcome defections to stay in the mix as one of the league’s best teams….

I’m sorry, but why does Doug Wilson deserve early credit? Because he made a no-brainer trade for a 540 goal scorer? Because he believes his team can perform in the playoffs this year? Whatever. I’m sure at this point last year he said he believed they would perform in the playoffs too. Until they DO perform in the playoffs then he shouldn’t get anything.

Red Winger, to be fair, there was also a Falcons game today. Not meant an excuse, but when you consider how badly beaten up Thrashers fans have been over the years, it’s no wonder the populace has little confidence in the team. A few seasons of good play, and the fans will come back.

I watched some of the Edmonton / Atlanta game today in Atlanta, and while the official game sheet says just over 11,000 were in attendance, there is no way it was that high. It looked like a poorly attended college or ECHL game.
If there were 7,000 at Phillips Arena today they were lucky.
