Ebbett Talks About The Phaneuf Hit

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
After taking part in a loose practice session during the club’s annual “First Flight” field trip for elementary-school students Thursday at Honda Center, Ducks rookie center Andrew Ebbett talked about the hit to the head he took from Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf the night before.
Sporting a broken nose, courtesy of the shot delivered by Phaneuf late in the second period of the Ducks’ 3-2, overtime victory, Ebbett considered himself fortunate he didn’t incur further damage.
“It doesn’t feel that good this morning,” Ebbett said. “Luckily, it didn’t give me a concussion or anything — I hope. The nose is just kind of throbbing.”
Ebbett related his recollection of the play near the Calgary blue line.
“I saw him coming, dumped it (the puck) by him,” Ebbett said. “I thought I had the inside track on him, to get on the inside. The last thing I saw was his arm kind of coming up. Watching the replay, it looks more like an elbow than a shoulder to me.”
continued and the only video of the hit I could find can be seen below…

What Would Pronger Get? That’s really the only question I’d want answered, even if Phaneuf gets a free pass.

“Grebs” didn’t get suspended for slew footing. Plekanec was the one suspended for slew footing Grebeshkov.
Also, from the replays from multiple views I saw last night, it looked to me like Phaneuf’s shoulder hit Ebbett’s face while his elbow got Ebbett’s sternum. Without any good video I can only go by what I saw once last night, though.

IcePyrate - the part you miss with the slewfoot is that that is one of the most dangerous hits in hockey, and almost always deliberate. The rulebook calls for only one penalty on a slewfoot: a match penalty. That’s how serious it is. Its embarrassing that the referees rewarded Plekanek with a simple minor for that deliberate attempt to injure.
Whoever made this video very deliberately left the additional replays off their clip, as the side view shows very obviously that Phaneuf hit him with a shoulder/forearm, not an elbow. Unfortunate that Ebbett was hurt, but it wasn’t an elbow. I suppose if you wanted you could argue roughing, but there was nothing vicious or overly illegal about the hit.

Typical of the league disciplinary staff to let Phaneuf go without a formal hearing, but turnaround and give Grebs two games for “slew footing.” Any fan has to ask themself, if this were a depth player on any team would they walk away without punishment?
This is the standard high paid player hits a rookie with a bad hit and because there was no injury there was no foul. Nice consistency Colin, maybe these players should headshot you and see how you feel about it.
