Edmonton Fans “Pathetic”; Hockey’s “Only A Game”

By Bill Houlihan

Oh, and according to Jamie Fitzpatrick of Pro Ice Hockey, those raising funds in Alberta (yes, all of Alberta...Calgary fans are now donating, as well) are “misguided.”

What’s the most pathetic aspect of this pathetic story? That so many people take a hockey game so seriously? Or that so many can find no better use for their charitable dollars? (The article notes that nobody expects MacTavish to accept the money, which will ultimately go to charity. One blogger suggests the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Ha-ha.)

If you are one of the handful who read A2Y during “The Punch in The Face” that was the Wings defeat at the hands of Edmonton, you know I developed a respect and affinity for the Oil fan base and bloggers. It’s hard not to like them.  Consistently trampled on for fifteen years, then finally allowed to see the payoff...only to come sooo close.  Yet, how do they react?  With humor.

Read any Oil blog and you’ll see what I mean.  “The Call” pissed them off, as it would any of us had it happened to our team.  That’s pathetic?

Cardinal fans who still send death threats to Don Denkinger 21 years after he blew the call at first in the ‘85 World Series...now they’re pathetic.

But Oiler followers who turn a negative into something we can chuckle at (all the while pointing out the fact that Mac Tavish’s “retarded” and “spastic” remark was distasteful)? That’s not pathetic. That’s just being a creative hockey fan.

And a generous one.  The charity Fitzpatrick scoffs at? Here’s the web site.

If you don’t find this effort “pathetic” and “misguided”, visit Battle of Alberta to contribute.

For Gord’s sake!  Spot on, Bill.  I’d be ticked off as well, and kudos to Oil Country for stepping up.
