Elias Appears To Be OK

via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils forward Patrik Elias left the ice on a stretcher after he took a shoulder to the chin from Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan Wilson 38 seconds into the second period of today’s game at Pepsi Center.

Through a team spokesman, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said Elias is “OK” and “has all of his faculties.” Elias is back in the locker room and, apparently, was not taken to the hospital. Lamoriello said Elias will be re-evaluated tomorrow and will travel back to New Jersey with the team after the game.

The Devils lost the game, 3-1.

refs did smart thing not calling an power play. Elias is a victim of the Armor plated shoulder pad to the jaw.

It was a clean hit, but the impact could have been much less if the shoulder and elbow pads weren’t solid boulders.

There is no legitimate reason for shoulder and elbow padding to be as big and hard as it is now.  Players would not be more prone to shoulder or elbow injuries if they were smaller and not as hard.  But checks would be far less dangerous if the equipment was adjusted.

It is a pretty simple and obvious solution.  But the only equipment changes the NHL employed at a recent meeting was decreasing goalie chest pads again to try and increase goals scored.
