Emery Done For The Season

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released the following statement today regarding goaltender Ray Emery:

“Ray Emery will have surgery in the near future to repair his right hip. He is suffering from avascular necrosis and will have a bone graft done to alleviate his hip issues. Ray will be out for the remainder of the season.”

The surgery will be performed by Dr. David Ruch at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. The date and time of the procedure have not yet been determined.

me thinks thou dost protest too much!

Why do I have a feeling Emery will have a Miraculous recovery this summer and not need surgery at all.  Mean while back with the team, this wonderful news cleared up enough cap space to land Hamhuis.

I guess it’s possible Holmgren would do something like that, but I think it’s unlikely. Brian Boucher hasn’t played that well this year. Michael Leighton has played remarkably well for the Flyers, but if there’s one thing that’s been consistent over Leighton’s career, it’s been his inconsistency. Emery has had success in the playoffs before, while Leighton has never played in a single NHL playoff game. I just think it’s a stretch that Holmgren thinks Leighton will continue to play like the next Hasek and will trade for Hamhuis, giving them five top-four defenseman.

My guess is that the price for Hamhuis is too rich.  Also my guess that Dan Ellis is the man that the Flyers trade for.  Also my guess, Holmgren re-signs Emery in June once he gets to see Emery rehabbing.  Fact is that Emery had two jobs for the Flyers this year:  (1.)  Stay out of the papers and (2.) put up respectable numbers.  Prior to his first injury, his numbers were enviable.  Since the injury bug broke, he hasn’t played that well.  This bodes well for the Flyers who can likely discount his salary demands as he has little evidenciary support for a sizeable raise.  Therefore, I see the symbiotic relationship continuing for another year at very least…
