Emery Gets Three Games

The National Hockey League has suspended goaltender Ray Emery for three games after his slash on Canadiens forward Maxim Lapierre on Saturday.

TORONTO (Feb. 12, 2007) – Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of a slashing incident during NHL game #835 against the Montreal Canadiens on February 10.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Emery will forfeit $14,839.56. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Emery was assessed a minor penalty for slashing Canadiens player Maxim Lapierre at 7:52 of the second period.
Emery will miss Senators’ games Feb. 14 against Florida, Feb. 17 against Atlanta and Feb. 20 against Edmonton. He will be eligible to return Feb. 22 at Buffalo.

bcrt, it was more like a slash to the face. luckily, Maxim had a shield on. if I recall, ray was on his knees and raised his stick up, sort of like a push to the face…

It was bound to happen with all of the crease crashing that is now being allowed. Emery won’t be the first to snap and do something stupid. Put that nets back on the old pegs and see who is still brave enough to run the goalie. The league encourages running the goalie, is against no-touch icing, but discourages hits along the boards.

I’m surprised yet not really. Emery did deserve discipline as all acts with intent to injure should. It was a dangerous slash but at it seemed reactionary. Lapierre almost hacked Emery’s wrist that had previously been injured and since he was being run a bunch of times during the game, his anger probably boiled over. He should have controlled his temper better but in my opinion the league has let a lot worse things slide.

Dang, thats pretty excessive. I didn’t see the slash but I don’t recall a goalie getting suspended for a slash before. At least not for 3 games.
