Emery’s #1 Status In Doubt

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,

While it might appear Ray Emery is the odds-on favorite to regain the starter’s role once his wrist is healthy, there is every chance Martin Gerber will have used the time to stake a hold on the job that was his last season before he tanked it early in the year. In his first four games – all victories – Gerber has looked solid, if not outstanding.

There is no denying Emery saved the day last year. He picked up the ball when Gerber fumbled and carried it all the way to the Stanley Cup final.

But let us not forget, it wasn’t necessarily a smooth journey.

I have seen a number of journalists, none based in Ottawa, speculate on this.  And I think its crap.  Ray Emery saved, and I do mean saved Ottawa’s bacon last year.  Ottawa was 5-11-1, and then Emery, with an injured wrist, comes in and settled the entire team done.  He didn’t just luck out, and the man did a great job in nets for Ottawa.  There is no way that they are going to shunt Emery back to the backup position after 4 regular season games.  Gerber has clearly refound his game to start the season, which is fantastic, but Emery is surely going to get his job back unless he drops the ball.
