from Gary Loewen of Sun Media,
Empty-net goals are for wimps - at least they are when they come in the waning seconds with the outcome of the game no longer in doubt….
The goal against isn’t charged to the goalie, it’s charged against the team. So why credit goals and assists for scoring into open nets? Simply award a team goal.
On the other hand, the NHL could use a fresh gimmick now that we’ve all become accustomed to the shootout. To challenge the shooter, put a cardboard cutout into the net after the real goalie vacates.
Or hang a cow bell from the crossbar. Ring it off the bell and collect a goal!

I know the gimmicky bits are a joke ... the bits about a cowbell and cardboard cutout ...
but it seems that he is really trying to discredit the empty net goal. I dunno, maybe i’m in too serious a mood this morning, but when he started comparing shootout goals and empty net goals, it seemed like he was serious.
just defendin’.

The writer of this article had a perfect opportunity to criticize Sidney Crosby about trying to pad his stats with the empty net when he should have just held onto the puck. As a rfesult, he gave up possession of the puck, and the Rangers tied up the game and went onto to grab two points in the shootout.

More Cowbell.
This is ridiculous on many levels. Two of which are the assumption that empty net goals are always scored when the game is not in doubt, and that they always come easily.
A lot of times it takes a lot of work to pass around 6 opposition players to get a shot on an empty net ... And goalies tend to be pulled when the game is close ... not at the end of a blowout. To dump the puck into the corner would be the stupidest move ever when you have the chance to cinch the game by just throwing it into the net.
... really. stupid.
