Ending the ASG

From Damien Cox in The Spin:
If the NHL Players Association has its way, we may soon see the end of the NHL All-Star Game as an annual event.
The union, you see, has a grander plan, one in which an annual break in the NHL season would take place every February, and depending on the year it would be filled by the Olympics, a World Cup, an all-star game or perhaps a spectacular hockey convention.
“It would be a win for everybody,” said former NHL goaltender and broadcaster Glenn Healy, now the NHLPA’s director of player affairs. “We’ve got to sell the game.”

I am all for it, if all the games are on TV like they are during the olympics. It is more exciting, and provides a lot of exposure. Only one issue I have is that if it were to become a standard thing, they would need to knock out at least 2 games from the schedule to accommodate this…or start the season a week or two earlier

They could have two games (Sat & Sun) played in the afternoon so that they could be seen back in Europe at night live…...The best games I ever saw were Challenge Cup 79 in NYC and Rendevous 87 in Quebec City against the Russians. Alas the CCCP is gone but a Euro All Star team from the KHL and other leagues would be interesting. I would cetainly watch it over the current debacle they call the ASG

If more international competition is the return for killing the all-star game, then I say throttle it. I would be much more interested to see a variety of events that would fill a break in the season - I think the players might appreciate a variety of events from one year to the next, too.

Keep talking….I’m listening. An Olympic break every four years and in the meantime a two game series vs European Allstars teams. You could only pick one guy off every NHL team so that the chance of injuries would not be a huge problem plus the idiot Canadian fans would be able to put every Habs journeyman on the roster.
