There is no easy way to say this, so I’m just going to blurt it out and get it over with.
I am not a fan of one specific NHL team. I don’t have a favourite.
There, I said it. Commence gun fire.
Does my failure to link myself with an NHL team make me any less of a Canadian? I hope not. Others might argue otherwise.
For years working within this industry, I have been asked countless times by fellow sports reporters and followers which team I am most fond of. And for years my answer has remained the same.
“Uh, well . . .”

While the “non-alliegence” tends to be more tied to baseball (my grandfather always said that a baseball fan doesn’t love a team, they love the game), I find this sort of refreshing. I may have a favorite team, and I may hate one team with every ounce of body fat I have, the other 28 teams are simply there, and if a good game breaks out between two of them, I’ll watch intently.
That is, unless I’m actually PLAYING the game…
