“He’s got no respect for the players, he’s been doing that for a long time.”
“He knew exactly what he was doing when he came with his shoulder. He knew exactly that he was going to hit his head and that’s how guys get hurt.”
-Vinny Lecavalier on Matt Cooke.
“There are certain players in this league, that you tend to see on the highlights with hits like that. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it was given by Matt Cooke. He’s a hard working player, I don’t want to take anything away from the way he plays the game but I think that there are times when guys are vulnerable and he still follows through. If that hit is not a suspension, I don’t know what is.”
-Martin St. Louis also on Matt Cooke. More at TSN.

It’s either a legal hit or it isn’t. Which rule did he violate?

intent to injure.
again - a pattern allows you to assume his intent. he has no credibility. an intent to injure someone, no matter how, is suspendable.

It was a LEGAL HIT !!!! Ugly results, But that Happens Hockey is a Brutal game sometimes

“Intent to injure”?? What if he missed? Still intent. How do you or anyone else know his intent? Legal but cheap, dirty hit. Simple as that.

To all you Cooke defenders I fervently hope someone “legally hits” Crosby or Malkin exactly the way Cooke hit Savard. You’ll all be screaming bloody murder then. Besides “Legal” doesn’t make it right. It’s perfectly “legal” for the Banks to take taxpayer money and then hand out exhorbitant bonuses but it doesn’t make it right.

You’re worse than Cooke for hoping that, it’s a despicable opinion to hold.
Nobody has claimed that Cooke is saint or that he’s a guy that plays the game in a respectful way, simply that the hit in question was legal because it was.
If you want to ban thugs and cheap shot artists just because of who they are, every team in the league is going to lose a guy or two.

The rule is wrong.
Rules should exist to protect players from events which they have no chance to protect themselves from. Rules should also exist to keep other players in control of, and held accountable for their actions.

to compare it to Richards is absurd. when there’s a pattern of trying to KILL people, it’s hard to give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t mean it
Why’s it absurd? Richards gave the same hit, but jucier and exhibits the same pattern. Richards spent three friggin games blindsiding Ovechkin in the playoffs two years ago.

This stuff has been going on for ages. Mark Messier (one of the top 10 players all time for many) used to head hunt every chance he got. He killed Modano, he tried to behead Dennis Savard (two Hall of Famers) and he absolutely tried to kill a Dman on the Flames in the playoffs. Messier got away with this stuff for years and the excuse was ‘it’s part of the game’.
Scott Stevens, Ulf Samuelson, Claude Lemieux, Ken ‘the Rat’ Linesman, Mike Milbury, Esa Tikhanen, Chris Simon, Dale Hunter, John Kordic, the 76 Flyers, Steve Ott, Steve Downy, Todd Bertuzzi… the list goes on. Thugs come in all shapes and sizes. Matt Cooke looks like a saint next to some of these guys.
It’s always been ‘attempt to injure’. The NHL are a bunch of cretins for selectively applying the rule. Jones gets 3, Lapierre gets 4, Richards and Cooke get nothing. It’s completely selective. Now it’s time to end this crap. The equipment is too hard, the players are too fast and strong and someone is going to die if it isn’t stopped. Pass the rule now and lets close the book on this stupidity. Attempt to injure. Anyone who tries it gets tossed (and if that’s somehow missed, the League rights the wrong the next day.) Case closed. How hard is that?

this is what i was talking about in my post in the other thread regarding this suspension.
to compare it to Richards is absurd. when there’s a pattern of trying to KILL people, it’s hard to give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t mean it. players all over the league have been coming out saying this guy is known for playing like this.
to not discipline him is just absurd.
