“[Sean Avery is] making a fool of the game. He crosses the line all the time. He’s an idiot. And if the referees see him giving it to Brodeur like he did in the playoffs - yapping, yapping, yapping - it’s pre-meditated. Give him a penalty. You’ll end it right away. If not, I think one of the Devils should come to Brodeur’s aid. Drill him, punch him, make him fight. If he wants to be a yapper, make him fight.”
-- Bob Clarke on Sean Avery.

Sean Avery is an agitator God. It’s that simple. He even pisses off the press box people he’s so good at it. Thats his job, and he does it well, and he even tickles the twine a lot while at it.
The simple fact that after he messed with Brodeur he scored a goal a few seconds later shows how great of a weapon he is. As long as the things he does don’t make his teammates mad or get them upset than any team should be begging to have him.

But that’s the problem with him, isn’t it? He DOES make his teammates mad or gets them upset.

Pot, meet kettle?
Bobby Clarke calling someone else an idiot who makes a full of the game is like Brian Burke calling Kevin Lowe a blowhard.

“Pot, meet Kettle?”
That was sorta my thought too, and I almost mentioned it in the post. But I didn’t feel like digging through the historical archives of Bobby Clarke in order to illustrate the point.

I think Avery is overrated as a player and underrated as an agitator. I can honestly say that I was sad to see him leave the Wings in the trade for Schneider, but have since grown to love the decision to get rid of him. Avery fans keep talking about what an indisposable weapon he is and how good he is at his job...then why can’t he stay in one place? I feel that if Bret Hull, Mike Modano, Marty Turco, and Brendan Morrow can’t handle him in Dallas, and he is shipped before or after his latest contract, we can all stop denying that his acts do more harm to his team than good.
