While the Detroit Red Wings are runaway leaders in the overall standings, they won’t necessarily represent the West in the championship series, says Clarke.

“Obviously, (GM Ken) Holland has the right people to get players for them, and (Mike) Babcock does a great job coaching,” says Clarke. “They’ve got a highly-skilled team and they have some physical players.

“They’re a tough team, Detroit, but a lot of the games they’re winning are by one goal. They’re good, but it doesn’t mean they’re like the old Oilers used to be. They could beat you by six or seven. Detroit’s really good but I don’t think anybody would concede they’re going to win the Cup.”

Most odds makers are conceding 2/1 odds.
Yeah Bobby, those grapes are unripe anyway.

Damn.  There goes my post for tomorrow morning, the one comparing the Wings to Gretzky’s Oilers.

1997
1. Detroit at Philadelphia, 4-2
2. Detroit at Philadelphia, 4-2
3. Philadelphia at Detroit, 1-6
4. Philadelphia at Detroit, 1-2

Detroit wins the Stanley Cup

Seems to be a few 1-2 goal wins there

To tell you the truth, I’d be really nervious going into the playoffs if the Wings were winning all their games by six or seven goals. Winning close games is what they are going to have to do in the playoffs. Winnings close games breads confidence in pressure situations. Thats what I want in my playoff team.

Er...Bobby?  About those little one-goal wins?  Here’s something new for ya:  they’re still wins.

The teams are all more evenly matched than they were years ago - that was kind of the intention of the labor strife a couple of years ago, if you remember?  NOBODY is winning games routinely by six or seven goals.  The average margin of victory is about two goals - blowouts are few and far between (and usually say more about the losing team than the winning team).

Yeah, the Wings are like the next generation oilers.  They can play like garbage and then beat you. (minnesota)

Flyers wont make it past semi’s anyway, their GM is an idiot…

On the other hand, when the playoffs start, the regular season doesn’t mattter anymore.  The Wings will be just another team trying to win 1 game at a time.

All the top teams since 1994 win most of their games by one or two goals. The game is tighter, the goalies are better… we should not have to tell Bob Clarke these things.

Furthermore, I don’t know why this is causing such a stir amongst Wings fans. Other than his stupid statement about one-goal games, everything he said is just stating the obvious—nobody should be claiming the Wings have the Cup locked up because everyone knows it takes the right mix of skill, determination, grit, and luck to win it.

So I am looking at the morning numbers and notice the Wings have a goal differential of (+70) and their nearest competitor Ottawa is (+26).

The Journalist who quoted him should have caught that.

I think this post needs something base and juvenile to offset all the intelligent and thoughtful comments already posted, so I’ll just say this: Clarke is a dickweed.

I’m not saying he’s wrong.  I’m not saying he’s right.  I’m just saying he’s a dickweed.

Oh.  I mean, IMHO.
