Evening Line

We didn’t play the way we wanted. This team wants to be in the playoffs, but it’s not going to come from anyone else. We have to work together and get some points. It doesn’t matter if we score ugly goals. It’s getting late and we have to find a way to win.”

-Maxim Lapierre of the Montreal Canadiens after their loss to the Leafs tonight.  More from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette.

This is essentially a better version of last year’s amazing Canadiens team but apparently it’s not working.  Underachieving?  Maybe, but they have the pieces necessary to win but perhaps a soft defense…I’d have to say this result (falling in the standings and losing at critical times) is because of throwing Price to the fire without full development; the penguins did this with fleury and he still isn’t consistent.  He is not ready, halak is not a number 1 and there’s nothing that’s going to change this year (even if a coaching change occurs).  When will teams realize that Steve Mason is the exception not the standard.  Even he may not be ready (see: patrick lalime) and playing beyond his professional ability.  A lot of times winning feeds into the egos of these young guys and it ruins their careers (Marty Gerber), hence the need for some AHL humility prior to being a star.
