Fill Rexall Place With “Hometown Heroes”

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Officially, it’s the Edmonton Oilers vs. the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 24 on Hockey Night in Canada.
But really it’s Tickets for Troops night, a first for the National Hockey League. The Oilers hope the entire building will be full of what they call their “hometown heroes.”
The Oilers hope to fill Rexall Place with armed forces personnel and their families stationed at CFB Edmonton by asking their season ticket customers to turn back their ducats for that game, in appreciation of the soldiers’ efforts.

That’s a great idea - down here a similar effort (not focused on a single night) is called Operation Eagle’s Nest, and they’re holding a fundraiser tomorrow in Nashville.  Proceeds from the event go to purchase tickets for soldiers and family members at nearby Fort Campbell.

What a Joke !!!!
After purchasing Season tickets for a company 6 seats and being forced to pay full pop for pre season games. I’ll be sure to mail my tickets back. So they can take more and not give anything back they should be thanking there season ticket holders for selling out the season tickets so fast considering there performance last season and there team they are going to ice this year. I don’t care if we are the only six people non military in the building I would rather not go to the game then give tickets back..

It’s a great idea Ty, whatever you say. It’s the blackhawks anyways, not like you’re missing Crosby or something worthwhile. And as you said, the Oilers aren’t a stellar team yet anyways, so what would you miss? Do you really go to every game anyways? And if you do, do you not consider yourself lucky to be able to go to every game? And if you do understand that you’re fortunate to be able to go to every game, do you not wish that in your own way you could share that fortunateness with others? And if you don’t believe that, then shouldn’t you move the **** out of Canada, and to some country that doesn’t found itself on caring about everyone in it and giving us all a fair shot in life even if we weren’t born into it?
Besides, do you really want to piss off Cherry? You’re talking about as un-Canadian and just plain uncaring as anyone I’ve ever heard. If you can afford to buy six seasons tickets, you can afford to get a charitable receipt to miss seeing Havlat on IR and the Hawks provide a lackluster performance. But I suppose when you’re pointed out on national tv in front of all your family, friends, neighbours, and all of Canada as the Grinches you are, you can expect a very positive reaction and good fortunes from then on. Good luck living that on.

What a great idea. I hope everything goes well and people don’t get too greedy. I will admitt if i had season tickets I would find it difficult to give them away. But, seriously this is something special that and the people going are just as deserving as I would be if not more. And besides it is one game.
