Not so fast, says Mike Ilitch, owner of the Red Wings.
On Monday, Ilitch announced the hiring of Steve Violetta as senior vice president for business affairs, a new position reporting directly to Ilitch. Ken Holland, executive vice president and general manager, will continue to run the hockey operation.
Violetta’s mission is clear: Get more butts back in those seats. ASAP.

The thing that encourages me the most about this move is the fact that Violetta worked hard to make the Predators’ players more visible in the community, including a “hockey caravan” in the summer and numerous public appearances that didn’t cost $250 to attend. If there’s a man to lobby for open practices, meet-and-greets, and non-Red-Wings-World content to help prove that Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and the Wings’ younger players are not in fact made of 2-dimensional cardboard, it’s Violetta. Likewise for actually encouraging discounted ticket packages to draw families to the Joe…
