Fire Caused Versus Problems

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,

The National Hockey League may be hot stuff for the fans, but the heat got out of hand Thursday night.
A CBC broadcast truck almost caught fire during the network’s telecast of the NHL Awards show from the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto.
Technical problems resulted, the worst of which affected Versus in the United States. The overheated CBC truck caused transmission difficulties forcing the U.S. cable channel to cancel its live telecast. Instead, it aired a World Combat League show and carried a tape delay of the NHL show at 11 p.m. EDT.

more on the Show and some HNIC talk…

added 7:29am, Watch a condensed version (32 minutes) of the NHL Awards Show…

Well, then.  I guess you can’t really be mad at Versus for a freak accident like that, huh?

Good thing I held my tongue and didn’t post anything last night at first, just on the suspicion that there was more to it than tape delays and a preference for mixed martial arts.

I wondered what happened to the coverage.  I had set the DVR to record it and when I went to watch it at 10:00 I see that WCL junk.  I could be wrong but I don’t remember a crawl on the screen saying why it wasn’t on, which would have been nice.  Oh well, will have to read who won here.

did you catch the very end of the Houston article?—that would be interesting—maybe Ken & Mickey on HNIC?  ---

Ken Daniels, who is from Toronto and worked for Hockey Night before moving to Detroit to call Red Wings games for the regional Fox TV outlet, was once seen as Cole’s successor. But could he juggle Wings telecasts and the Hockey Night job?

Depends on how the League schedules the Wings, really.  It works for Jim Hughson because if the ‘Nucks play a Saturday, he’s calling it on CBC, anyway.  Since it’s not like the Wings and Leafs are playing exceptionally often, that could be a bit of a sticking point, since despite their proximity to the border, the Wings are still not a Canadian team.

Now, if the Wings only play Canadian teams on Saturdays, that could work, but even so, it’s a wee bit iffy.

Versus may not be able to blame for the glitch, but did anyone see a notice that the awards show would have been broadcast at 11:00? How many people turned it on, watched some ultimate fighting and turned it off never knowing that the show would be delayed? You’d think that after the NBC to Vs debacle in the playoffs that they would know how to better communicate with their ever dwindling audience by now

VERSUS’ hockey audiences and ratings have doubled since last year, so while it is easy to casually mock their efforts, numbers show otherwise.  Not that this is going to prevent lazy journalists and jaded fans to say otherwise.

The only crawl I noticed that said the show would be delayed was at 8pm, when I turned back to VS., since I knew CBC was starting their broadcast at 8.  They had nothing at 7 or 7:30, since I checked both those times.
