from Bob Duff of Duffer’s Dabbles at the Windsor Star,
They were first overall in their draft year, and currently, they are foremost among the National Hockey League’s scorers. Entering play Tuesday, the top three goal scorers in the NHL were all former first-overall picks in the NHL entry draft - Alexander Ovechkin (2004) of the Washington Capitals and Sidney Crosby (2005) of the Pittsburgh Penguins are tied with 44 goals, followed by Steven Stamkos (2008) of the Tampa Bay Lightning with 40. As well, the leaders in all three major offensive categories are also former first overall picks. Ovechkin tops the scoring race with 92 points and Joe Thornton (1997) of the San Jose Sharks is the league’s assists leader with 61.
A similar occurrence came during the 2006-07 season. That season, the scoring race finished Crosby (2005) 120, Thornton (1997) 114, and Vincent Lecavalier (1998) of the Lightning with 108.
