Five Games For Tootoo

from the CP via TSN,

The NHL has suspended Nashville Predators winger Jordin Tootoo five games for his punch to the face of Dallas Stars defenceman Stephane Robidas.

added 6:57pm,

“In reviewing this incident, Stephane Robidas appeared to be initiating a confrontation by approaching Jordin Tootoo,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “While a player is entitled to defend himself, Mr. Tootoo’s forceful blow to Robidas’ head was an overly aggressive and inappropriate response. The fact that Mr. Tootoo’s actions resulted in an injury to his opponent also was a factor in this decision.”

A little light IMHO. Possibly because this is his first offense?

HNIC Saturday kept repeating that Tootoo is a player who plays the game completely unaware that there is a puck on the ice.

All truth right there.

After seeing the replay of this incident half a million times, there is something that keeps popping out to me: after Modano gets up from the initial hit, and just after Tootoo nails Robidas, Modano pulls his stick from in back of him and chops Tootoo over the back.  IMO Modano does this blindly and could have hit him anywhere.  I am in no way defending Tootoo on this and I am a big fan of Modano, but after all of the hoopla over the Simon incident why has this stick work gone completely unmentioned?  Is it because it is Mike Modano and he is a star player?

Well with his style of play, and his reckless abandon he deserves it.  How many runs did he make at Wings players during the home and home game last week and no calls were made.  I have to agree with shep from california

Mac, I guess I really never thought about it, but seeing as you mentioned it.  I have to agree with your observation…

When you play cheap, goon hockey, you’re going to get cheap, goon hockey played against you.  Accept the consequences of your style of play.  Sorta like, “Live by the sword, die by the sword.”

I’ve looked at this film frame by frame.

Tootoo hits Modano clean.

Robidas tries to hit Tootoo in the back and Tootoo defends himself. So what is the dirty part again?

Tootoo was still on the ice when Robidas started charging him. Robidas was taking the cheap shot.

It’s on the tape, and I spelled it out at my place (I don’t usually blog hockey, but this was a special occasion):

Okay, let’s just think about this. The hit on Modano was borderline when you take in to count the time left on the clock, the placement of the players on the ice, and the score. The “I turned and saw him CHARGING me and defended myself by pretending I was in a BOXING RING” defense is CRAP. As some have said hits are to be given and received, this is hockey...totally agreed. BUT is the possibility of someone’s entire life as they know it being taken from them in the matter of half a second really how we all want hockey perceived? There have been several of these type of hits this season all across the NHL and I for one think it is UNNECESSARY!  How can anyone ASSUME what was on Robidas’ mind? He is NOT the dirty kind of player that many seem to make him out to be! As I have said before, I truly feel that if any player, star player for a team or not, is injured seriously in this type of irresponsible play, the offender should be out the same amount of time/games the injured player is out as well as cover their medical expenses! I believe this would detour such immature action from reoccurring over and over...
