Five In Front Of The Net

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,
Besides trapping in the neutral zone, the latest craze is packing five players around the net. “Everybody wants to play 0-0, 1-1 hockey,” the Wild’s Pavol Demitra said.
Wild veteran Brian Rolston was shocked against San Jose when he skated to the top of the Sharks’ zone and San Jose wingers didn’t even consider coming at him.
“I’ve noticed the same thing,” Ducks checker Rob Niedermayer said. “You’re in their end cycling the puck and everything’s condensed. Then you get to the point and you’ve got to shoot through that mess.”
This is the byproduct of the obstruction crackdown, Wilson said.
more defensive talk…

That article is absolute crap. Just put the neutral zones back were they used to be. That is 340 sq ft added that will make the trap much more inefficient, and the PK’ers will be able to cover the points without creating open ice in the offensive zone.

I am sick of all these people wanting to make so many changes, but here is a drastic, interesting idea from Wild Coach Jacques Lemaire:

Don’t remember seeing this article on KK, but I’d love for it to be a post so we can talk about it. I can’t decide what I think of that idea yet (although I’m sure it would never happen).

NHLJ, I will post it Sunday morning. Saturday with ten days until Xmas are pretty slow here.
More people will see it on Sunday.

There is not a rink configuration that a coach cannot adapt to trap hockey. At this stage of the game, the trap is being supplemented by the “collapsing” defence, but you can’t tell me that Mike Babcock did anything other than ride a five-man defence that included clutching and grabbing to the 03 Cup Finals, either.
