Flames Have A Fighting Chance

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

Make no mistake, this is going to get ugly.

It has to, or the Calgary Flames have no chance.

Round 1 of what is shaping up to be a slugfest goes tonight at HP Pavilion, where the underdog Flames will begin their attempts to get the league’s hottest team off its game.

And what better way to do it than by waving some chum named Eric Godard around the Shark Tank and seeing who bites first.

“Oh, I think you’re going to see some fights. That’s kind of the way the team makeup is this year,” smiled Craig Conroy, whose club has nine players with at least three fighting majors this season.

Wait, Calgary is playing the NHL’s hottest team?  When did Washington move to the Western Conference?

Poor Adam.  Had to find out about the existence of a western conference this way?

Poor Adam!

And it should be one heck of a series.  Can’t wait for it to start tonight.

Washington finished the year 9-1.  No matter how you slice it, that’s the hottest team in the ‘league’.  Now, maybe SJ was the hottest team in their ‘conference’ but not the ‘league’.

On top of that Montreal and Anaheim both finished the season hotter.  I’ll give SJ that they finished the season as hot as Detroit at 7-2-1.  So not only is SJ not the hottest team in the league, they’re tied for the 2nd hottest team in their conference.

That’s smokin’ hot. Woooo!

Washington played out their season vs the Southwest division. Enough said.

Here in the west, we take more than the last 10 games into account.  San Jose has been on a roll with a record of 18-2-2 over the last 22 games of the season. Up until the last two games they had gone 20 games without a regulation loss.  This amounts to a bit more than Washington even though they put together a hell of a run.  Washingtons last 22 amount to 15-6-1.  The west wins again!

There in the West the Detroit Redwings went 54-21-7 over the course of 82 games.  Accumulating 115 points to San Jose’s 108.  Looks like the Redwings were the hottest team in the league, with San Jose the 2nd hottest.

The Caps had 94 points bud….hardly worth calling “The hottest team in the NHL”.

Ignore the last two games of the season, which honestly the Sharks didn’t even compete in (also consider an incomplete roster & division clinch), and you have a 18-0-2 since a five game losing streak.

Yes, Detroit has the best record in the NHL.  That’s outstanding.  But going INTO the playoffs, the Sharks are red hot.  Detroit’s been stellar for a good chunk of the season.  Is San Jose the best team in the NHL overall?  Nope.  But at this point of the year, when it matters the most, the Sharks could make a legitimate argument.

Ignore the last two games of the season?  So you’re telling me the Sharks are on a 3 game losing streak?  Looks like they may be one of the coldest teams in the league.
