Flames Looking At Another Early Round Exit

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Be it tonight at home or Wednesday in Chicago, the Flames appear destined for their fourth-straight, first-round exit.
As easily predicted by their late-season disintegration and injuries woes, the Flames are once again on the brink, having nothing left to show for an otherwise solid NHL regular season.
Credit the Blackhawks for taking it to the Flames in Game 5 with an awesome display of controlled aggression, skill and poise far beyond their years.
Shame on the veteran Flames for coming out flat and failing to come up with an emotional response to the beatdown.

And? They’re playing a higher seeded team, against whom they were winless in four tries during the regular season. The two years before this, the Flames were the seventh and eighth seed, hardly positions to warrant optimism. In 2006, their first round loss could be considered a disappointment, as they were the third seed and were upset by Anaheim.
It seems that ever since their (wildly improbable) run to the finals in 2004, the Calgary media expect more of the same every year. If they lose to Chicago, in the last five seasons the Flames will have upset another team three times, been upset once, and lost to a higher seed four times. While Calgary homers may consider those results sub-par, I think a more objective observer would find them pretty reasonable.
If Francis is willing to venture outside the winter cottage he’s set up in Phaneuf’s jockstrap, maybe he could call Sutter to task for not doing enough to improve the team, blame Keenan for overworking Kipper, etc. But calling for an “emotional response to the beatdown” is pretty silly (remember the emotional response against the Wings in ‘07? How did that work out?).
