Fleury Retires

via the CP at TSN,

Theoren Fleury’s career is ending in the same place it began.

The 41-year-old has decided not to try and pursue a comeback with another NHL team, choosing instead to retire as a member of the Calgary Flames.

“I could not sign with another team,” he said. “I retire a Calgary Flame.”

As a 38 year old hockey player (Adult rookie league at Anaheim Ice) the Fleury story was one I planned to keep up on.  It’s nice to see the older guys playing strong hockey….so it was a bummer he didn’t make the cut, and I can understand why….the energy of a 20 year old in the same conditioning as a 40 year old is just different.  The younger guys just don’t have the wear and tear that comes with more games.  I sure don’t want to believe it, but it’s true.  smile But anyway, he gave it a shot…and did pretty good in the pre-season.  But hey, if he loves hockey, it’s always available.  Maybe not the NHL level, but who cares, its really the game itself that’s important.  Whether it’s street hockey with your kids out front, or in an adult league at the local rink, the game will always be there….as long as you can get on the rink, your good to go.

Good for him to go out on a high note.  A great memory for his kids and family, and at least he knows he gave his comeback attempt everything he had.

It’s a bit of a relief that he knew when it was time to quit for good.  It would have been a shame to have him plod on this year and a have Claude Lemieux-esque comeback where he was worthless for a season.

Instead he gets to go out and say “Hey, I was a force those last few preseason games before I retired”.
