Flyers Facing More Than One Opponent

from Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News,

Derian Hatcher has arguably been the Flyers’ best defenseman in the playoffs. If not, then Kimmo Timonen has. So far in this series with Montreal, we have seen a sucker punch with intent to injure on Timonen go unpunished, and in last night’s harrowing 3-2 Flyers victory, we watched Hatcher get thrown out of the third period of a playoff game for a boarding penalty that occurred almost simultaneously with Tomas Plekanec’s blatant attempt to injure the Flyers’ R.J. Umberger by taking out his knees away from the puck....

Can’t wait to see what’s in store for tomorrow night.

This series is just three games old, and already there is way too much circumstantial evidence to support the perennial theorem embraced in the lower 48 at this time of year.

Namely, that Canada looks out for its own.

Update 1:53pm ET (from Alanah): With a hat-tip to Orland Kurtenblog for reminding me of this video.  (Us Canadians are so sneaky and conniving… watch out!). smile

This article is completely ridiculous. He’s whining about a conspiracy even after the flyers won the last two games? And he makes his point with a quote from “canadian born” Chris Therien about an old series opposing the flyers and the leafs? (I guess the fact that Therien is canadian eliminates all suspicion of bias from a guy who’s played almost his entire career with the flyers)

You’ll never hear me defend Kostopolous’ actions, but intent to injure?  Seriously?

Also, if I remember correctly, Plekanec’s hit on Umberger was a hip check above the knee. He didn’t take out his knee and it wasn’t intent to injure.

I can’t agree more about Plekanec’s hit on Umberger.  I don’t even think that Plekanec saw him. Even if he did, I’ll never feel sorry for the Flyers, the dirtiest, and most detestable group of players in the league.

First of all, every Flyer fan will tell you that Sam Donnellon knows little about hockey.  He’s a Phillies writer who only puts out Flyer coverage during the playoffs.  His points do not represent the majority belief of the Flyer faithful. (If you want to read informed opinions on the team, check out Tim Panaccio of the Phila. Inquirer instead.)

Second, the only officiating bias I’ve heard coming from actual Flyer fans relates to the alleged diving of Sidney Crosby - and New York Ranger fans aren’t far behind us on that one.

Whatever you want to believe about the Flyers and their current style of play - much different from the real 1970’s Broad Street Bullies - the truth is that great teams win regardless of the calls and non-calls.
