Flyers Lose Jones

from Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly,

Randy Jones won’t be going back on the Flyers’ roster.

The defenseman was claimed Thursday morning by the Los Angeles Kings on re-entry waivers. That means Jones’ $2.75 million cap hit will be split between the Flyers and Kings, who must pay the $15,000 waiver claim price as well

In other words, the Flyers just took a $1.375 million cap hit for a player they lost on re-entry.

Financially, it was a huge gamble and the Flyers lost.

“He would have helped our team but that’s the risk you take,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “What are you going to do? … Those are the rules. We knew the risks going in.”

Holmgren said a couple clubs asked about him recently, but no one asked the Flyers to put him on re-entry so he could be claimed.

This goes to show you how little Eklund really knows.  He posted this today on his site, which now forces you to pay $20 to comment.

On Randy Jones…

Knew the Kings liked him and as we said yesterday, the Flyers weren’t putting him through re-entry unless they had a taker...It hurts to lose a guy and take half a cap hit, but when the player was clearly not going to play for the NHL squad the Flyers are seeing this as “getting back” half the cap hit.

Sometimes you look at the Cap Hit as half full I suppose.

That comment on Eklund’s site is horrendously idiotic.

They could have gotten ALL of the cap hit back had they kept him in the AHL, losing him for nothing and THEN having to pay 1.3ish mil for the priviledge is a huge, huge mistake.
