Flyers May Be Looking For A Goal Scorer

If the Flyers make a move before the deadline, it will likely be for a winger who can provide offense to one of the top three lines. They could make a strong push for Carolina veteran Ray Whitney, but without a first-round pick this year or next—both surrendered to Anaheim in the Chris Pronger trade—Holmgren will be hard-pressed to give any team a package that brings back a goal-scoring forward.
If Holmgren cannot land a goal scorer, the Flyers will head into the stretch run with a team whose talent level is considered inferior to the Washington Capitals’ (90 points) and Pittsburgh Penguins’ (76). Holmgren disagrees, saying the distance between the teams is not as great as the standings suggest.
“One thing that has been proven since the lockout is that once you get into the playoffs, anything can happen,” Holmgren said. “We’re working our way back into the fight. I think our team stayed together when things were rough back in December and they showed a lot of perseverance to right the ship.
“Every team has gone through down periods, and hopefully the one we went through will benefit us in the long run.”
