Follow Along

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

Saturday was a wonderfully disgusting tour of Gary Bettman’s hockey world for fans of the Vancouver Canucks if they were paying attention, espeically those who might be season-ticket holders.

Follow us while we explain. As everyone knows, the Calgary Flames acquired the negotiating rights to Jay Bouwmeester in a trade with the Florida Panthers whereby they gave up a player they weren’t going to re-sign in Jordan Leopold and a third-round pick. That’s fair enough. But in order to clear the cap space to have even a ghost of a chance to sign Bouwmeester, they first off-loaded the $2.3 million U.S. cap hit of defenceman Jim Vandermeer to, of all teams, the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for a forward named Brandon Prust who was making just $500,000.

That’s right. The Phoenix Coyotes, whose bills are being paid by the NHL, felt free to expand their payroll by taking on an expensive Flames defenceman. That means the Flames now have the best chance to sign a player the Vancouver Canucks might liked to have signed, by off-loading a cap liability in Vandermeer to the Coyotes, a team whose bills are being paid partly by the Aquilini family through revenue sharing and most recently by league dues.

Another crap article out of the northland, bottom line if the Canucks wanted bouwmeester, they could have traded for his rights. The Coyotes have nothing to do with their failure to deal with Florida, because they thought they could wait and get it for nothing. Perhaps they still will and just maybe Calgary blew it, but that doesn’t change the fact this article is BS.

As a lifelong Canucks fan, let me apologize to anyone who read Mr. Gallagher’s article. What a steaming pile.

What are you talking about Bettman for?  The team will be sold this summer (read the papers) and the new owner will be on the hook.  The season is over.  How is the NHL paying a salary for a player who isn’t on a payroll until the season starts?

If you have a problem with Bettman at least have something valid to complain about.  Don’t make it up.

Meh.

Jim Vandermeer is a solid, physical, and much sought after defensive defenseman. His salary and cap hit is well worth what he brings. If it was the Canucks Mr. Vandermeer was coming to, this guy would be lauding the move. This guy’s a moron, is he a real hockey writer?

I’m a die hard Canucks fan and am ashamed Tony Gallagher is such a jealous homer. What an insult to us Canucks fans.

Congrats if you sign Jay Bo Calgary. Sorry about Tony being a loser and having a conspiracy theory. The media really shouldn’t be so one sided but Tony let this get to his head.
