Ah, lady spuds.

From Panaccio:

Flyers club chairman Ed Snider met with Swedish center Peter Forsberg this afternoon at the Wachovia Center, and the two agreed they are nearing a decision on his status with the team.

And it should happen by the end of the weekend.

“It went well,” Forsberg said of the meeting, which ended shortly before 1 p.m. “I’m sure it will all be settled by the weekend. I’m certain something will happen.”

Forsberg, 33, can become a free agent this summer if the Flyers do not sign him to a new deal. The NHL trade deadline is Feb. 27.

Both Forsberg and Snider refused to use the word “deadline” to describe his situation last night. Snider said he never gave Forsberg a deadline.

Said Forsberg, “I don’t know if it’s a deadline, but everyone wants it settled as soon as we can.”

If Philly is not stupid, they will be giving a “going once, going twice” warning to the other teams in the run for Foppa before they pull the trigger on this one. I’m sure with a gun to their heads, other teams will give competitive offers. By the way, TFP ( http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/nas070215.html ) reports that Parent and Klein could be part of the deal heading Philly’s way.

Well, at least this might finally make people take Nashville seriously as a hockey team. A heathly Forsberg with a healthy Kariya will be absolutely deadly.

Thank god that soap opera is over… Now we can count the days until Forsberg’s foot ailes him again and is scratched…

Nashville won’t make it out of the First Round.

I Told you Homlgram would screw this up.

He isnt the GM next year for Flyers.

He screwed it up? If Foppa signs in Philly during the off-season, this will be one of the greatest steals in recent memory. Especially considering that Forsberg may have finally solved his wonky foot problems for good.

No screw up FF, if the Preds don’t make it to the SCF, they screwed up.

And even if he doesn’t sign in Philly again, its still a damn good deal for the future of the Flyers.

So now the Preds have the league’s two best floppers in Forsberg and Kariya…

The PHilly Inquirer and Sportsnet corroborate…

FlyersFan - I don’t see how Holmgren screwed up!  Upshall, Parent and two high picks for a guy who could very well be there teammate come training camp!

Does anyone know if the picks are conditional??

Upshall and parent are both 1st round picks.  Plus a 2007 1st and 3rd.  No way should the Wings pay that for an injured rental.

Was Nashville desperate to not let Detroit get Foppa?

So Philly might get MORE draft picks if Forsberg doesn’t resign with them?

I thought the Nashville Predators were financially hurting.  The league (Red Wings et al) support them.  So how will Nashville re-sign Foppa this summer?

Kudos to the Preds on this one.  They managed not to give up a current player, and traded away elements they could afford to lose.

A few thoughts…

If Nashville did this at least partially to make enough of a splash to increase attendance, will it work in a non-hockey market?  (Especially if he gets hurt again this year, and doesn’t resign with the Predators after the season.)

If the other teams mentioned (Detroit, Anaheim, and Vancouver) were really potential destinations, I wonder what players Philly wanted from those teams in return for a Forsberg rental.

This is the only trade that would result in him wearing an uglier uniform after the trade than before.  Orange and mustard are not at all among my favorite colors.  smile

via the Detroit Free Press,

“Great addition for Nashville,” said Red Wings general manager Ken Holland. “(Nashville) paid a lot of futures but they got themselves a great player.
“We made a pitch. Obviously, we came up short.”
Holland said he last spoke with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren two days ago.
Did it ever get to a point where Forsberg was asked if he would report to the Wings?
“I asked Paul Holmgren; he seemed to think we had a shot at him,” Holland said. “But it never got to the point where we got a deal done. So, I don’t know if he would have reported or wouldn’t have, other than the manager telling me he assumed we’d be a team on his list.”

As you also know, he denied THAT was him.

Much too much for a rental-- because I can’t see Foppa staying in Nashville after their playoff run.  If they win the whole thing, the gamble paid off.  Couldn’t you just hear Wings fans on this if they’d sent Filppula and/or Kronwall plus picks as part of the deal?

Someone asked about Nashville getting money.  Yup, as long as they are in the bottom half of the NHL’s revenue rankings, they are eligible for revenue sharing.  This year, they have to outpace the NHL’s overall growth rate in order to qualify for 100% of their potential share of the pot.  If they don’t, they give up 25% of that.  Nashville has lost a lot of business community support, which if not regained has Leipold saying he may move the team.  Can a Cup championship lead to future sellouts on a consistent basis?  They have to get there first, then we’ll see.

Beforee the forsberg trade was done, timmy pananico posted an article inwhich entitled

“Flyers give Forsberg an ultimatum over contract”

The Flyers have given Peter Forsberg a deadline for a decision and it’s this weekend.

Club chairman Ed Snider met with the Swedish center this afternoon and told him he wanted to know before Sunday whether he intends to re-sign with the team or whether he will waive his no-trade clause.

Forsberg said the meeting went well. “I’m sure it will all be settled by the weekend. I am sure something’s going to happen. I don’t know if it is a deadline but both of us want this settled as soon as we can.”

Forsberg previously said he didn’t want to put a deadline on an answer because he is uncertain as to the health status of his surgically-repaired right foot, although he admits it is much better than weeks ago.

Calls to both Comcast President Peter Luukko and general manager Paul Holmgren were not returned.

Flyers officials referred the matter to Snider for comment.”

This was posted at the same time eklund started the forsberg rumors.

Well Nashville signed a great player of the past.  He has not proven anything this season and it may turn out that Forsberg was not the great deal everyone thought he was.  PS.  Was his foot really in that bad of shape, or did he plan this all along.

Tony, I have been saying all along he would go.  Many Wings fans know Forsberg.

FF, how do you think Dwayne gets 90% of his rumor talk?  As I said, this Eklund monikor is going to be spun as a group effort.

Not saying he can not play.  My point was playoff’s are a whole different animal.  Mac, Forsberg is a great player.  He deserves the respect he has earned.  I am saying that he has missed 1/2 the season and if the foot injury is real, then he mnind find it a tough row to hoe.  Thats all smile
