via the Twitter of Frank Seravalli,
Dan Carcillo was suspended for four games today by the NHL.
added 2:12pm, from Kevin Kurz of PhiladelphiaFlyers.com,
General manager Paul Holmgren issued the following statement on Sunday regarding the suspension:
“Decisions come down from the league…do I agree with them all? No. I certainly do not agree with this one. We do not have a lot of recourse in this situation. Dan will serve his suspension, and we will move on.”

They didn’t give Cooke and Ovechkin’s teams half a period of PK. Other than that, nice job.

…do I agree with them all? No. I certainly do not agree with this one.
He wanted 50 games.
No but seriously, I think Laviolette won’t mind it.

And to think, they gave up Scottie Upshall for that goon…

Carcillo’s days are probably numbered. Philly’s the only team that gives jobs to guys this stupid and something tells me Laviolette’s not going to want him.

I dunno, Steve, the Habs have Georges Laraque in the lineup, Steve Downie’s in Tampa, Matt Cooke is still in the NHL and so on. Carcillo will probably not have a hard time finding a job if the Flyers were to cut him, and I seriously doubt they would. The Flyers are a dirty team, have been since their inception in 1967, why change now?

can 2011 come any faster.

lol, upshall plays a similar role but doesnt fight alot.

No fighting league or no hitting league? Carcillo’s action speak that he would rather there be fighting but no hitting. Given the choice, I’d rather see hits than retarded fights after clean hits.

I’m waiting on hearing how many games Keith will get for his end to end head hunt and head shot on Cooke last night.

There’s a pretty big difference between “fighting” and “cheap shotting a guy in the face before his gloves are off”. Carcillo’s slightly-underdeveloped brain apparently told him to sucker punch Bradley first. If you think sucker-punching a guy who agreed to dance but didn’t even have a chance to drop his stick, let alone his gloves, is OK, then you’re probably better suited to being a fan of wrestling rather than hockey.
That said, Philly really is terrible.

While he’s no saint, Laraque’s not the loose cannon Carcillo is. He actually takes relatively few non-fighting penalties, where Carcillo takes a ton. I’ve seen more than one game where some selfish, stupid, dirty action by Carcillo at an inopportune time has literally cost his team the game. It’s that latter trait that’s not going to sit well with Laviolette and will ultimately drum him out of the league, not his overall dirtiness.
Downie’s a closer analogy, but Downie’s got the speed and skill to consistently score 15-25 goals per year, if he’d ever calm down and grow up. Carcillo did get 17 one year, but subsequent years have proven that aberrant.
There are plenty of goons out there that don’t lose you the game in their 3 minutes of ice time. Carcillo isn’t one of them.

gary and boys want touch hockey inwhich they reward teams power plays for teams inwhich their shadows where attack by the opposing team. if you touch a player you get a double minor and if you get into a fight you get suspended.
bradley is a crap fighter and the only thing carcillo did wrong was that he broke the code.
Posted by FlyersFan on 12/06/09 at 05:37 PM ET
I’m not exactly sure what you’re watching. Bradley initiated an insanely clean hit on Carcillo. Carcillo being the idiot that he is thought he would impress his new coach (who’s against fighting, btw) by going after Bradley. In that still screen you posted it shows EXACTLY why he got 4 games. Look at Carcillo being a nano second away from hitting Bradley and Bradley’s gloves aren’t even close to hitting the ice.
Your hyperbole crap is amusing, but extremely sad.
Posted by Heaton on 12/06/09 at 05:40 PM ET
As for Cooke, cheapshot artist, most definitely. Oftentimes I’d say he’s out there looking to injure somebody.
But also a capable third liner who kills penalties and seems to only try to hurt people in situations in which it doesn’t cost his team (like last year when he suckered Lecavalier from behind, taking him out for the year. The game was already decided, what did he care if he was kicked out?).
Carcillo doesn’t any of those other things and his goonery seems to always hurt his own team, which is why his days are numbered.

Carcillo taking stupid penalties? Check.
Sky blue? Check.
Grass green? Check?
FlyersFan talking like a stone age idiot? Check.

Well, Laraque does some insanely stupid things, to wit, the hit on Kronwall. Racked up I don’t know how many penalty minutes, gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead, and the game. Laraque takes a fair amount of non-fighting penalties, it seems to me, usually lazy, stupid ones, too. But he’s also feared, which is where his value comes from. After the Kronwall hit, not a single Red Wing even tried to talk to Laraque. And when he’s in the lineup, fewer liberties are taken with the Habs’ smallish forwards, because whomever does will have to answer to Laraque.
Posted by Harrald The Red on 12/06/09 at 05:51 PM ET
Seriously ru kidding? nobody fears laraque and havent for over 5 years. His 2 punches then takedowns are pathetic. The red wings never retaliate. It had nothing to do with fatso laraque being the guilty party. They got a 6 min PP.Last night washington got a 9 minute PP? did they retaliate on carcillo? bradley was slow on the trigger his fault.Protect yourself at all times. nights ago Parros had Boogard in the same spot and parros didnt punch him.Thats more code than being dirty.wendel clark made a career off what carcillo did last night…

So far Laraque’s got two suspensions in roughly 700 games and gets 1.6 PIMs per game. 55% of his career PIMs come from fights, generally of the staged variety with some other waste of a roster spot.
Carcillo’s got the same number of suspensions in under 200 and gets 4.2 PIMs per game, only 35% of which come in fights.
That’s a big, big difference in the volume of stupid penalties between the two players.

Okay, I have to call BS on this one. Shortly after that game I checked how much ice time Laraque had, because after committing penalties on two separate players on the same shift I didn’t remember him much. He only had a little over four minutes of ice time the entire game.
Even if you want to get in a pissing contest with an opponent, it’s pretty hard to do so if he plays so little that you can forget he’s there. No opportunity for talking to him after that. It’s pointless to talk tough when a guy is stapled to the bench because his team is trying to come back in the hockey game - and why bother getting involved in a stupid fight when your own team is leading? It’s just plain dumb - there is nothing either smart or tough about it.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 12/06/09 at 06:34 PM ET
to add to Baroque, the Wings didn’t even need to “send a message” because this was the only time the two teams will meet this season, barring them facing each other in the SCF.

Hey FlyersFan, I have another picture for you (in case it doesn’t work, you can find it here: http://www.japersrink.com/2009/12/5/1187475/are-you-sure-about-that-daniel)

I think it’s pretty clear what’s going on here, Carcillo is going for a KO regardless of what Bradley intends on doing. The only reason his gloves come off is because he can see Carcillo gearing up for a punch - and that was a dumb idea too, he should have brought his hands up to protect himself since Carcillo was clearly intending to fight.
And in the interest of full disclosure, look at my “name” and you should be able to figure out what team I cheer for.

I don’t mind Carcillo…at least he doesn’t bite like Hartnell…CHOMP CHOMP.
There are out in the open dirty guys and sneaky dirty guys…at least with this guy you know where he stands in that group (unlike the players like Richards, Hartnell, Ovechkin, and Malkin…all these guys can be really dirty game in/out).
Posted by stoneman from vegas on 12/06/09 at 07:58 PM ET
Good call on throwing Malkin into the mix. Name someone else who has thrown so many unpenalized elbows since Messier retired.
Oh, yeah. Pronger. My bad.
Posted by steve on 12/06/09 at 09:47 PM ET
Shoulda been ready….have any of you ever fought?
the guy hesitated. and got dropped. hockey is a rough sport, quite pussying it up.

Wow, thats like a whole week of somewhat consistent punishments in the NHL. They managed to suspend Cooke, OV, and now Carcillo, and for once they all actually deserved it! Way to go Collie!
