Franzen Had a Subdural Hematoma

From Ansar Khan at MLive:

Wings general manager Ken Holland revealed that Johan Franzen had a subdural hematoma. It’s a form of brain injury in which blood gathers between the dura (the outer protective covering of the brain) and the arachnoid (the middle layer of the meninges). It usually results from tears in a vein. They had to wait for the blood to dissipate before clearing Franzen to play again. There is no long-term concerns. He should be fine, Holland said.

and more including updates on Chelios and McCarty

Update 11:23am ET, June 8th: From the AP via MLive:

The Detroit Red Wings’ Johan Franzen says it was “a little bit scary” when he sustained a subdural hematoma that kept him out of six games of the NHL playoffs. He says blood pooled between his skull and brain and took two to three weeks to be absorbed.

General manager Ken Holland tells the Detroit Free Press he thinks Franzen was injured during the second-round series against Colorado.

Jeez.

That just makes Gary Robert’s beyond cheap, Bertuzzi-esque sucker punch all the more disgusting.

WWGRD?

Well, golf, then retirement.

I am amazed that Franzen was allowed to play at all after this injury.

To think this guy was playing THAT WELL with blood on his brain!

I think they need to change his nickname from the Mule to the Bull. To take a headwound like that and keep playing at the level that he did. Freaking amazing. And the Pens tried to take the Bull by the horns and lost.

Europeans aren’t tough?

Franzen played fantastic while he had a bruise on his brain!

That is beyond tough, by any definition.

I wondered if it could be something like that when they were so insistent that it wasn’t a concussion.

Glad that he spoke up instead of continuing to ignore the headaches, and that he will be okay.

I must admit I was doubting it was a true concussion as well, because they just kept saying “concussion-like”, and he had numerous tests. Concussions have become common enough that they’re usually found right away, and this just seemed to take forever to get a diagnosis. Plus, it seemed strange that he could have a concussion without being hit in the head hard or knocked out, and no one could remember a particularly hard hit to his head.

“Concussions have become common enough that they’re usually found right away, and this just seemed to take forever to get a diagnosis.”

They (the Wings organization and their med staff) likely diagnosed it immediately.  Due to the nature of it (ie. not a concussion, but a more rare, potentially more serious brain injury) they mislead the media to avoid a circus/distraction/pressure on Franzen coming back from a ‘life threating injury’.  Big Media outlets would lose it over a story line like that, while concussions are par for the course.
