from Crain’s Detroit Business,
For Royal Oak’s Superior Fish, the Motor City’s weirdest hockey tradition — octopus tossing — is a win-win situation, with increased foot traffic, a minor bump in revenue and a whole lot of goodwill.
In a typical week, Superior Fish sells about 20 to 30 pounds of octopus to its retail clientele, at $3.95 per pound, and anywhere from 100 to 200 pounds to its wholesale customers, said Kevin Dean, who co-owns the store with brother David Dean.
When the playoffs are in full swing, the retail octopus trade may spike to 100 pounds on a home-game day.
On a side note, I went to high school with the Dean Brothers, good guys. Make sure to check out their website, you may be surprised by the “thumbs up” picture!
